The Chelsea Pensioners

The Chelsea Pensioners The Royal Hospital Chelsea is the home of the Chelsea Pensioners, the Nation's Army Veterans.
(1135)

We provide a fitting home for veteran soldiers, to whom the nation owes a debt of gratitude. The Royal Hospital Chelsea is famous around the world as the home of the scarlet-coated Chelsea Pensioners. It was founded by King Charles II in 1692 ‘For the succour and relief of veterans broken by age and war’. Well over 300 years later it continues to serve this same purpose, caring for veteran soldier

s to whom the nation owes a debt of gratitude. Today the Royal Hospital Chelsea is home to around 300 Chelsea Pensioners, who come from across the United Kingdom and have served in conflicts from World War II to the Falklands. They all understand what it means to be a solider and the potential sacrifice that signing up entails. Anyone who is over sixty-five and has served as a regular solider, who has no dependent spouse or family, who finds themselves in need and who is “of good character” can apply to become one of the world famous Chelsea Pensioners. Former officers must have served at least 12 years in the ranks before receiving a commission. As well as a warm welcome among fellow veterans, the Royal Hospital Chelsea provides meals, accommodation and activities for its residents. The purpose-built Infirmary with its specialist dementia ward cares for veterans as they face the increasing challenges and trials of old age. Although the Royal Hospital does receive some funding from the government, it does need to raise in excess of £2million every year to pay for running costs. The Royal Hospital Chelsea is home to a thriving walking rugby team, the Scarlet Warriors, who train weekly and compete against teams from across the UK. And if you need proof that age is no barrier to sport, look no further. With two of our players in their late 80s, we really are all the evidence you could need 💪🏉

Walking rugby may be a slower pace, but everything that matters is still there. The teamwork, the determination, the competitiveness and plenty of good humour along the way. For our Chelsea Pensioners, it is a chance to relive the camaraderie that defined their Army careers, while staying active and enjoying something new.

If you or someone you know has served in the British Army and is interested in becoming a Chelsea Pensioner, we would love to hear from you. Life at the Royal Hospital Chelsea is full of opportunities like this, where community, purpose and a bit of friendly competition go hand in hand.

This week, we are delighted to welcome an incredible line-up of musicians, performers and guests to the home of the Chelsea Pensioners for Live at Chelsea ❤️🎤

Events like these are about so much more than opening our grounds to the public. They are a meaningful opportunity to share the stories, heritage and spirit of the Chelsea Pensioners with a wider audience. They create moments where visitors can connect with those who have served, hear first-hand about life at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, and better understand why our mission remains so important today.

For the Chelsea Pensioners themselves, these occasions are equally special. They offer a chance to enjoy outstanding performances, meet new people and take pride in sharing their experiences and community with others.

We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who has visited us so far this week, and to those who are still to join us. Your support helps ensure that those who have served our country continue to feel valued, respected and cared for.

Today is Age Without Limits Day and at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, it is a reminder of something that truly defines life in our community: that later life is lived fully, with purpose, opportunity and connection 🙌

The Chelsea Pensioners, and veterans in our wider community, embody this every day. Their lives reflect decades of service, resilience, friendship and identity, and our role is to ensure those lives continue to be lived with energy, independence and meaning. From taking part in activities across the site to spending time together as a community, there is a real sense of engagement and camaraderie that shapes life here. It is this shared spirit that underpins what it means to age well at the Royal Hospital Chelsea.

Our mission is clear. We provide a home where veterans can continue to lead fulfilling, active lives, surrounded by friendship, support and opportunity. A place where people remain involved, connected and able to make the most of each day. Age Without Limits Day brings that same idea into focus more widely. It highlights the importance of valuing experience, championing participation and recognising the richness of later life ❤️

We are proud to stand alongside those driving this conversation forward, and to see that spirit lived out across our community every day Age Without Limits

Last week we marked Founder’s Day, a highlight of the Royal Hospital Chelsea calendar and always a truly special occasion. While the day itself is a wonderful celebration filled with tradition, pageantry and community, it is also a powerful reminder of the enduring mission of the Royal Hospital Chelsea 🏛️❤️

Bringing together In-Pensioners, staff and guests, Founder’s Day reflects the values at the heart of the Hospital: care, camaraderie and respect for those who have served. It offers a moment to pause and recognise not only the rich history of the institution, but also the vital support and sense of belonging it continues to provide today. We were honoured to welcome Her Majesty Queen Camilla as part of this year’s celebrations, and we extend our sincere thanks for the continued support of the Royal Family.

As we reflect on another memorable Founder’s Day, we celebrate not just the event itself, but everything it represents and the remarkable community that makes it so meaningful each year.

Chelsea Pensioner Roy Palmer is no stranger to a challenge. From skydiving to wing walking, he has already ticked off some seriously daring feats. Now he is back with a new mission, and this time it is firmly on the ground but no less impressive.

Roy has launched what he calls the “Scarlet Wheels Challenge”, taking on the incredible task of cycling the full distance from Land’s End to John O’Groats on a stationary bike. He is clocking up the miles right here at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, appearing at events across the summer to keep the wheels turning and the momentum going.

So far, Roy has powered past 140 miles, taking him just beyond the Exeter milestone on his virtual journey, and he is not slowing down. His next stop will be at Live at Chelsea this week, where visitors can cheer him on in person and see the challenge in action.

Why is he doing it? Roy is raising funds for two causes close to his heart, the Royal Hospital Chelsea and the War Horse Memorial. With every mile, he is helping to support the Chelsea Pensioner community and honour an important part of military history.

If you are heading to one of our summer events, be sure to stop by and show your support. You can also cheer Roy on from afar by donating to his JustGiving page and helping him reach his target.

At the Royal Hospital Chelsea, our mission is to care for and support former soldiers who have served their country. Today, on the anniversary of D-Day, we reflect on the legacy of service and sacrifice that defines the Armed Forces community 🎖️

On 6 June 1944, Allied forces landed in Normandy, beginning the liberation of Europe during the Second World War. It was a day marked by extraordinary courage and profound loss.

The Chelsea Pensioners represent generations who have served with dedication and resilience. Their experiences, and those of their comrades, are a powerful reminder of the human cost of conflict and the enduring importance of remembrance.

Through our work, we are proud to uphold their legacy and ensure their stories continue to be recognised.
Today, we remember all those who took part in D-Day, and all those who did not return ❤️

Founder’s Day 2026 at the Royal Hospital Chelsea brought the community together to honour a tradition that has endured for more than three centuries 🎖️❤️

At its heart were the Chelsea Pensioners. Their service, their resilience and the bonds they share continue to shape life here every day. This is not only a place defined by history, but by the people who live it. We were honoured to welcome Her Majesty The Queen to join the celebrations, marking an occasion that recognises both the legacy of the Royal Hospital and the veterans at its centre.

Founded in 1682, our mission remains clear. To provide a home, community and care for veterans of the British Army, with Chelsea Pensioners at the forefront of everything we do. Founder’s Day is a reminder that this mission is not just something we speak about. It is lived daily through the lives of our Pensioners, in a community built on comradeship, dignity and mutual support.
