🚂 An exciting voluntary opportunity for someone with upholstery skills!

The South Devon Railway based at Buckfastleigh in Devon, is looking for a volunteer with upholstery skills to lead a small team recovering and repairing railway carriage seats, vintage bus seats and other upholstery as required.

It’s a brilliant opportunity to put your skills to use in a rather different setting and help care for some wonderful pieces of transport history.

AMUSF Summer Office Closure ☀️

The AMUSF Board has agreed to close the office for a short summer break from 24 August to 7 September.

During this time, you can still leave emails and voicemail messages.

We will respond to all correspondence and calls as soon as possible when the office reopens.

We hope you’re all getting a chance to take a break, enjoy the summer and find a little time away from the workbench! ☀️

🎓 Yesterday, my AMUSF students graduated — not only graduated but walked away with Distinctions, the highest possible grade.🎉

I keep coming back to how far each of you has come. So many of you started your own soft furnishing businesses while still learning, and watching them grow and flourish alongside your skills has been one of the greatest joys of teaching this course.

Our verifier Zoe, who brings decades of experience in this industry, spoke so warmly about the quality and beauty of your work. Standing in front of it all on display yesterday, I couldn’t hold back my emotions. Zoe thank-you for the time and care you took. Having an external verifier really confirms the standard of each students work.

To my graduates: You didn’t just learn a craft — you built something of your own with it. I’m endlessly proud of each of you, and I can’t wait to watch where you go from here. Success is waiting for you all🤍🧵

We’re delighted to welcome Atelier Valerie Hayes, Atelier Valerie Hayes upholstery as a member of the AMUSF. 🎉🎉

Based in West London, Valerie specialises in the bespoke restoration and reupholstery of traditional and contemporary furniture.

Trained in upholstery at London Metropolitan University and qualifying with the British School of Upholstered Furniture.

Valerie works her clients to restore, reinvent and preserve much-loved pieces.

Alongside her studio work, Valerie is also the author of The Upholstery Pricing Guide, a practical resource created to help upholsterers price their work with greater clarity, confidence and consistency.

A very happy 90th birthday to Barry Townsend, CEO of Townsend Systems Ltd., from everyone at the AMUSF! 🎉🤩

Barry founded Townsend Associates, now Townsend Systems, and at 90 he is still working five days a week! 🙌

Barry has spent an incredible 50 years working in the furniture industry, and his extensive knowledge and experience have helped Townsend Systems develop a wide range of upholstery products to support upholstery businesses, including Bench-PAL, the adjustable workbench designed to make working at the bench easier and more comfortable.

Pictured is Barry in 1978, at the beginning of what has become an incredible career in the industry.
