To Friends and supporters of The Conservation Foundation

We are delighted to see our Founder and Director David Shreeve’s name included in the King’s first Birthday Honours List (MBE for Services to the Environment).

This news comes whilst The Foundation is celebrating its 40th anniversary. It has created a great heritage over the years and all of us at the Foundation would like to thank you for your support over this time and look forward to it continuing in the future.

HAPPY 90TH BIRTHDAY TO BIDDY BAXTER
Many of us grew up under the watchful eye and kindly influence of Biddy Baxter. Somehow whilst at the helm of Blue Peter she found the time to be on the Board of The Conservation Foundation and even after retirement she continued to be one of our keenest supporters. We don’t have badges to give, but if we did then a very special Birthday Badge for Biddy would be on its way with much love and affection.

The race is on to find what lies behind ancient yew trees’ mystery decline

Tree-ring research is underway to discover why some of the extraordinarily old and valuable yew trees growing within Newlands Corner on the North Downs have died. It will be carried out by Toby Hindson of the UK’s Ancient Yew Group, with the support of The Conservation Foundation, and is a key part of a multidisciplinary effort to solve the problem of yew decline.

The Conservation Foundation was very sad to hear of the passing of Olivia Newton John.

Olivia was one of a number of celebrities who supported the Foundation’s Big Bird Race organised to raise awareness of the effects of long line fishing which was responsible for the deaths of thousands of seabirds including an estimated 100,000 albatrosses.

The race held in 2004 involved fitting small transmitters to young birds prior to them leaving their nesting grounds in Tasmania and heading out on their flights towards the Indian Oceans.

Olivia named her bird Xanadu which was one of 18 birds taking part in the race which was won by an albatross ‘owned’ by Jerry Hall.

We are excited to announce the first three recipients of our new Young Conservation Leaders Award.

Lorraine Aldridge: MSc in Marine Vertebrate Ecology and Conservation.

Nicole Velandia: MSc in Marine Vertebrate Ecology and Conservation.

Alicia Shepard: MSc in Marine Environmental Management

The Young Conservation Leaders award aims to support the growth of a new generation of conservation leaders by providing a one-off financial grant to help enable young people to take up learning and development opportunities irrespective of their financial circumstances.

For this, the awards first year, we have partnered with Exeter University’s Marine Environmental Management and Marine Vertebrate Ecology and Conservation MSc programmes.

“With world oceans now massively degraded by human impacts, MSc graduates in subjects like “Marine Environmental Management” or “Marine Vertebrate Ecology and Conservation” are required to help address the problems involved. To achieve a Young Conservation Leaders Award, the recipients have shown exceptional drive for conservation work though volunteering and all intend to use their prize money to pursue more of this. As skills and knowledge from an MSc need application practise, the opportunity to gain experience from further volunteering is career enhancing”.  Dr. Julie Hawkins, Senior Lecturer in Marine Environmental Management, Exeter University.

In celebration of our 40th anniversary we are excited to be launching a new award initiative.

The Conservation Foundation’s Young Conservation Leaders Award aims to support the growth of a new generation of conservation leaders by providing a one-off financial grant to help enable young people to take up learning and development opportunities irrespective of their financial circumstances. The scheme seeks to support candidates with a demonstrable track-record of academic excellence and leadership in the field of conservation at Masters level or above.

Sharing Eden, published by The Conservation Foundation and , is celebrating its tenth anniversary with a number of possible developments.

The book, one of our Faith Works projects, is written by David Shreeve, Harfiyah Haleem and Natan Levy and features green teachings from Jews, Christians and Muslims. It is helping garden designers to develop an interfaith garden of healing which we hope will be accepted for Chelsea Flower Show in 2024.
The garden will show how all the main religious traditions record the healing qualities of plants and trees in their ancient texts and traditions. If the Foundation’s application is successful, we will be seeking applications from potential faith sites to provide a permanent home for the garden once the show has finished.

Two of the Foundation’s projects, Gardening Against the Odds and Green Health, have both shown how gardening helps improve physical and mental health. The Chelsea Flower Show garden and a proposed new award, will enable more examples to be promoted to increase awareness of the opportunities and value that therapeutic gardening can bring to the world of social prescribing. The hope is that different faiths will be inspired to open their green spaces for use by their communities for therapeutic gardening.
