Ambitious arts teachers 1. Arianna’s pumpkin-in-progress; 2. Giacomo’s sphere; 3. Arianna’s star.

Guess which subject stresses my kids (and me) more than any other? Yes, art. Many tears were shed in many years of middle school to arts and technical design.

Bless, I hope this brings me some good karma! 😊

Convegno 📖 ita/eng
Leonardo and his circle: painting technique in the light of restorations and scientific studies a cura di Antonio Sgamellotti e Brunetto Giovanni Brunetti

The Italian artist, engineer and scientist Leonardo da Vinci was born on this day in 1452.

In this charming composition a young woman looks out at the viewer, proudly indicating a unicorn kneeling beside her. She holds a coiled rope attached to his collar.

Leonardo has worked fluently with pen and brown ink, using vigorous parallel hatching for shading and rippling strokes for the unicorn's mane and coat. His economical treatment of the tree and plants makes for a light, breezy setting. A few lines loosely frame the drawing, which has been cut from a larger sheet.

: It’s no mean feat to be history’s most famous polymath, but Leonardo da Vinci surely takes the title. Though he is best known for his talents as a painter, he was also an engineer, architect, and an inquisitive scientist whose notebooks reveal an avid interest in anatomy, astronomy, botany, and cartography. Phew!

It’s 573 years today since Leonardo was born on April 15, 1452 in Florence, just in time to have a foundational impact on the High Renaissance and, by extension, on the course of Western art. After studying under the pre-eminent Andrea del Verrocchio, Leonardo drew a huge following for elegant compositions and the sfumato or slightly blurred, smokey texture of his paintings. He died in France in 1519 at the age of 67.
