Alex has been volunteering with Coin Street for a couple of months now, motivated by a strong desire to feel more active and connected within their local community. They support older adults at our weekly Coffee Morning.

From the outset, volunteering provided an opportunity to engage with others and contribute to something meaningful close to home. Through this experience, Alex has developed a stronger sense of purpose and belonging, gaining fulfilment from being a part of a shared effort to support the neighbourhood.

Despite being relatively new to volunteering, Alex's experience demonstrates how quickly it can make a positive impact. Building relationships with like-minded people and contributing to community initiatives has been both motivating and rewarding. Alex is eager to deepen their involvement and continue making a difference. This reflects the welcoming and collaborative spirit that defines volunteering at Coin Street.

Our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. On 3 June, we brought together volunteers from Coin Street, Oasis Waterloo, The Bridge at Waterloo & Bright Centres as part of the Connecting Waterloo Community Project.

It was a special evening to celebrate and recognise the incredible contribution our volunteers make to our Waterloo community and their continued commitment to helping it thrive.

Thank you for everything you do.

Martha began volunteering with Coin Street’s weekly singing group in November 2025, motivated by a long-standing connection to the organisation and a desire to give back. Having attended fitness classes and events for years, stepping into a volunteer role felt like a natural next step at the right moment.

The group brings together a diverse mix of participants, including several with complex needs. Initially, Martha found the environment challenging, with sessions often lively and unpredictable. Over time, she adapted her approach, learning to “go with the flow” and offering a calm, steady presence. Her support has become especially valuable in helping sessions run smoothly and ensuring participants feel comfortable and included.

Volunteering has also had a significant personal impact. Living with COPD, Martha had previously considered joining a singing group to support her breathing, but it was this opportunity that prompted her to take action. Despite describing her singing as less than perfect, she finds joy in the activity and the inclusive atmosphere where no one judges.

Even on busy days, she finds the sessions transformative, consistently leaving feeling more energised and positive than when she arrived. The combination of music, community, and shared experience continues to be both uplifting and rewarding.

Martha encourages others to volunteer in areas they already enjoy, making the experience both meaningful and sustainable while amplifying personal benefits.

Meet Margaret who has been volunteering with Coin Street since 2018, supporting Feel Good Saturday sessions and tutoring in Upgrade Yourself.

Margaret has become a consistent and valued presence at our sessions, helping to create a welcoming, inclusive nature in our sessions for older residents and our young people.

Over time, she has seen growth amongst participants and personally through regular attendance and a focus on both physical and mental wellbeing.

Margaret values the flexibility of volunteering and the opportunities for learning, from training courses to cultural outings. For her, volunteering is not just about giving time, but about building community and shared experience. She encourages others to start small but stay consistent, as meaningful relationships grow over time.

We will be recruiting new tutoring volunteers from September 2026 onwards to support our youth community in the next academic year. Tutoring is on Monday evenings in person and Wednesdays online – great for anyone working from home! Find out more: https://coinstreet.org/volunteer-us

Join us this Pride Month as we celebrate LGBTQ+ visibility, equality and community with two events open to local residents, colleagues and friends.

On Monday 15 June, we’ll be screening an episode of It’s A Sin, Russell T Davies’ acclaimed drama following a group of friends navigating life, love, and the HIV and AIDS crisis in 1980s Britain. It’s a powerful reminder of the lives lost, the activism that emerged, and the resilience of LGBTQ+ communities during that time.

On Monday 22 June, we’ll host a Lunch & Learn with a panel discussion exploring LGBTQ+ progress, current challenges and what comes next. We’ll be joined by Daniel Fulvio (Rambert), Victor Chamberlain (Borough and Bankside Councillor and Chair of Pride in Southwark) and Raga D'silva (Older Q***r Voices).

We would love you to join us. For more information and to let us know you’re coming, visit: https://forms.office.com/e/6LG3r3hQXm

Yesterday we were delighted to host the launch of Age Well Here, a brilliant new community-led directory designed to support older people to stay independent and enjoy life across the South Bank and neighbouring areas.

Bringing together local services, activities and advice in one place, the guide is a practical and thoughtful resource that will make a big difference to people in our community. Coin Street is proud to have supported and endorsed its development alongside local partners.

The launch itself was a warm and lively evening, with great speeches, wonderful performances from Lambeth North Music Hall and refreshments.

You can get a copy of the guide at the Coin Street neighbourhood centre help desk, or download it here: https://coinstreet.org/latest/age-well-here-launch
