National Children's Air Ambulance

National Children's Air Ambulance Welcome to your local Air Ambulance Muswell Hill retail store where your buys help save lives. Shop, donate or volunteer to help keep us flying.

Children’s Air Ambulance is an inter-hospital transfer service flying babies and children from one hospital to another for specialist care. We work with 10 NHS paediatric and neonatal retrieval teams across the UK, enabling them to bring their specialist equipment on board to safely transfer their patients from one hospital to another. With our ability to fly approximately four times faster than a land ambulance, we can minimise travel times and the risk for little patients. For more information visit childrensairambulance.org.uk

We’re proud to be featured in an article from Lincolnshire Live, offering a behind-the-scenes look inside our Gamston Airport base 🚁

The article explores how our purpose-built helicopters operate as flying intensive care units, helping critically ill babies and children reach specialist care across the UK.

It also highlights the people behind every mission, from our pilots and crew members to the specialist clinical teams we work with. We’re grateful to Lincolnshire Live for visiting the base and helping share more about our work.

Two missions. One day 🚁

Recently, our teams completed two important transfers with Clinical Partner Teams SoNAR and Embrace:

An incubator transfer to University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, completed in 1 hour 53 minutes instead of 4 hours 16 minutes by road.

A transfer to Birmingham Children's Hospital and Charity, completed in 47 minutes instead of 2 hours 8 minutes by road.

Spotlighting the amazing people behind our missions: Tom Finney 💚🚁

Tom has been part of the National Children's Air Ambulance crew since July 2025, bringing nearly a decade of experience as an IHCD Technician with East Midlands Ambulance Service. Before joining us full-time, he also worked with Great Ormond Street Hospital and Charity's paediatric critical care transport team.

Tom feels privileged to play a part in helping critically ill babies and children reach the specialist care they need across the country.

Away from missions, family time comes first, although you may also find Tom playing the euphonium with his local concert and marching band! 🎺🎶

A family holiday took an unexpected turn when 19-month-old Penny became seriously unwell.

While visiting Whitby, Penny was admitted to York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust with a suspected bowel blockage. Having previously undergone a lifesaving liver transplant, she needed to return to Birmingham Children's Hospital and Charity, where her specialist team could provide the urgent care she needed.

The National Children's Air Ambulance worked with Embrace to transfer Penny and her mum safely to Birmingham in just one hour. By road, the journey would have taken around three hours, without accounting for possible traffic delays 🚁

Penny was met by her specialist medical team and went on to receive the surgery she urgently needed. Thankfully, she has since been recovering well and has celebrated her birthday surrounded by her family.

Yesterday, our G-NICU crew and Airdesk team worked with Clinical Partner Team ECMO to complete a specialist transfer to Great Ormond Street Hospital and Charity 🚁

The patient reached the hospital by air in just 46 minutes. By road, the journey would have taken approximately 2 hours 28 minutes, saving over 90 minutes.

Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is similar to the heart-lung bypass machine used during open-heart surgery. The equipment connects to a bespoke patient transfer stretcher on board the NCAA helicopter, circulating blood outside the body to remove carbon dioxide before returning oxygen-rich blood to the patient.

Help keep our vital service flying. Please share this post and consider donating today 💚

Have you or a loved one ever travelled with the National Children's Air Ambulance? 🚁

We’re inviting former patients and families to share their experiences, just as Elodie’s family has done.

In 2020, two-year-old Elodie became seriously unwell following complications from a heart catheter procedure. After spending three weeks at Evelina Children’s Hospital in London, she needed to continue her treatment closer to home in Norfolk.

Elodie’s mum, Cara, had never flown before, but when she learned they could travel by helicopter to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn, she knew it was the quickest way to get Elodie home. The flight took just 52 minutes, compared with more than two and a half hours by road.

Sharing stories like Elodie’s helps us raise vital funds and keep flying. If you’ve had personal experience of our service, we’d love to hear from you.

Verity’s story: a flight to surgery, and back to dancing 💚

Verity Nuttall from Congleton has loved performing for as long as she can remember — but last September, after becoming seriously unwell, she needed urgent specialist heart surgery and a transfer that would change everything.

Living with Dilated Cardiomyopathy since she was a baby, Verity’s condition worsened during a family holiday, and when doctors at Alder Hey realised she needed specialist surgery in Newcastle, our National Children's Air Ambulance stepped in with our Clinical Partner Team NWTS.

The helicopter flight took just 48 minutes, saving 4 hours and 49 minutes by road. For Verity and her mum Katie, that meant a calmer, safer journey to the care she needed.

Today, Verity is back doing what she loves most: dancing, performing and enjoying being a young girl again. Read the full story here: https://ncaa.uk/verity 🚁
