Battersea parkrun event number 80 ✅

We had 1172 people joining us to run, jog and walk round yesterday, including 73 first ever parkrunners! 🌳

Well done to everyone out there in tough conditions 🌞

This was all made possible by Run Director Pat and 49 fab volunteers donning their pink high viz 🦺

Special kudos to first time volunteers Nathan, Steph and David. Megan also volunteered for the 25th time! 👏

We welcomed lots of visitors including Sue and Chris holidaying from New Zealand who did their first parkrun! 🧡

Annoyingly we lost 10 finish tokens yesterday! Remember they are ours, not yours. Please put them back in the buckets 🪣

The Battersea parkrun community was on full display this weekend 🧡

On Friday, our volunteer roster was looking in a pretty sorry state and for the first time this year we thought we might not save things in time to avoid a cancellation 🥲

Step up Battersea Beat and The Ladies of London who both managed to conjure an extra 15 or so volunteers! 🤝

We are so grateful to all of our 53 volunteers this weekend who helped Run Director Pat put on a great parkrun 🦺

Thanks to Emma King for this week’s Run Report!

In our house Saturday is now always parkrun day and this Saturday was no exception - this time touristing at a new venue for us - beautiful Battersea Park. Our home course is Billericay in Essex, so visiting Battersea, one of London's largest parkruns, it was exciting to appreciate the size of the event and experience the multiple finish funnels - I don't know how they work but it all flowed seamlessly!

Saturday was another lovely sunny day with slightly welcome cooler temperatures which helped the field of 1225 participants create 187 new personal bests - amazing! There was 428 first time attendees at Battersea and 109 first time ever park runners - what a fantastic place to start their parkrun journey, well done everyone! The event was made possible by 53 amazing volunteers, without whom the parkrun could not take place, so huge appreciation to all!

My parkrun journey started back in November 2017 - at first going slightly begrudgingly with my husband (my thoughts were - running 5k at 9am on a Saturday morning, are you mad?!) although since I have discovered touristing and all the various parkrun challenges, it more likely to be the other way around and now hubby is getting dragged along to parkruns all around the UK and now further afield - we have just completed our first alphabet challenge and hoping to do many more!

So finish token scanned, another parkrun done and I'm looking forward to next Saturday already, and there I think is where the real magic of parkrun is - it asks for so little of us, just that we turn up, but gives back so much in return: friendship, sense of community, encouragement, confidence and a reason to start the weekend with a smile - long may it continue!

So thank you Battersea parkrun, it was a fabulous start to the weekend! 🌳

We joined Battersea parkrun this weekend as part of an organised trip for one of our fellow parkrunners charity funding bid. We have been to Bushy Park on a coach trip twice before so it was time for a change.

It was a very early start this morning with a 4.40am alarm!! Getting my husband and kids up wasn’t all that easy but we made it out the door by 5.15am ready to get our coach at 5.45am.

It was a gloriously sunny morning as soon as the sun was up. The journey was event free and we arrived at Battersea at just gone 8am, plenty of time to hit the toilets, and mooch on over to find the sign.

Upon arrival it wasn’t all that clear where the start was but it was already very busy.

Once the sign photo was complete, I helped various other people with my photography skills before it was time to make a start.

I’d like to share information from the first timers briefing but it was so busy and noisy, and a lack of microphone or speaker meant I didn’t hear a word of it! There were certainly some milestones, and also tourists, someone of course was from New Zealand ! Once this was complete we then had to walk on the path up to the start. We ended up walking round in a loop to join the back. It was well organised considering how busy it was. If all else fails just follow everyone else!! For this reason I couldn’t hear any of the RD briefing either but I made sure to clap in all the right places anyway!

The start was obviously incredibly busy and it took some time for us to even pass the start line.

There was a total 1132 runners today, including 84 people doing their first ever parkrun today 🤝 I’m almost certain it won’t be your last, parkrun is the biggest family you’ll ever be a member of!

Of course parkrun could not go ahead with the amazing volunteers. Todays event was all made possible by Run Director Dylan and 46 fab volunteers today - thanks to all them for helping out 🦺

The course itself is an easy, flat, pathed 2 laps around the park. A mixture of sunshine and shade.

I was running with my 7 year old today so it didn’t take long for us to be lapped by the front runners. I have to say, I felt a little like Mufasa from the Lion King being surrounded and chased by wilder beast!! The speed of other runners also leaves me a bit in awe! Our second lap was much more sedate and chilled but there was still plenty of support along the way.

The first finisher (male) was Oliver Varney in a super speedy 15:14. The first female finisher was Caroline Williams in an equally impressive 17:33.

I came in in position 1096 (different from my token which was 1077!) in just over 41 minutes. My daughter was glad to be finished (there was a bribe of a visit to the LEGO shop afterwards!!). This was my 136th parkrun and my 42nd location.

If I’m being honest this wasn’t my favourite parkrun, it was very busy and very fast (and being a slower runner felt a bit vulnerable) but having said that it was extremely friendly and there was a great vibe. It was great to get another London parkrun ticked off.

Battersea parkrun was on fire yesterday 🔥

How did you all get on out there?

It was great to have London Fire Brigade and their Operational Fitness Team with us to raise awareness of fire safety and careers in the fire service 🚒

They also provided a big chunk of our volunteers for the event which was very welcome given the holiday season 🤝

We welcomed 1125 participants running, jogging and walking round including 83 first ever parkrunners 👋

This week’s run report is from David Knight!

Greetings from Weston-super-Mare! I'm in London overnight for a gig and what better excuse to tick off another London parkrun? Battersea is one that I've known about long before coming here. Despite being just over one year old, it's already developed a reputation as one of the busiest & fastest in both London & the country, especially thanks to YouTube. My home parkrun (Marine Parade) is also known for being a quick one (apart from the summer months when we move to the beach) but we barely manage half the volume of participants Battersea gets.

I stayed in Pimlico, so getting to and from the park was essentially my warm up & cool down. We've been blessed/cursed (pick your own lane) with a warmer than usual summer but today wasn't too bad, especially with the amount of tree cover in the park.

I'm always fascinated with the logistics of bigger events and how they manage all the volunteer duties. I imagine it's no easy task, so I think a massive thanks is in order to everyone for gave up their time this week. parkrun is a charity, and the people you see in hi-vis don't get paid a penny for their efforts, and I will personally always be grateful for them.

From what I could see, the event went off without incident. My time in the funnel wasn't too long, and barcode scanning was quick and efficient too. A total of 1147 participants crossed the finish, 172 of them running a new PB, congrats!

Also congrats to the 83 who ran their first ever parkrun, welcome to the family! Fastest finisher today was Larry Ryan in 14m 44s, I think that may be banging on the door on your course record? Fastest female was Abbey Mary Brooke in an impressive 16m 40s. And the highest age graded runner today was Chris Ryan with a score of 90.11%. Well done all three of you!

I write this as I start my long coach journey back to Weston-super-Mare begins. Thank you for having me Battersea, hope to see some of you at Marine Parade in the future, we welcome you with open arms.
