From Sinjar to Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires was more than a visit for Nobody’s Listening. It was an opportunity to connect experiences, learn from communities affected by mass atrocities, and build relationships that can lead to meaningful collaboration.

At the Memory Studies Association Conference Memory Studies Association , Thikran Mato, Director of Nobody’s Listening and Yazidi genocide survivor, and Ryan D’Souza, Founder and Curator, presented The Forgotten Voices of Sinjar and shared how survivor testimony, art, and immersive storytelling can bring the Yazidi Genocide into spaces of education, memory, and international dialogue.

At ESMA, we met survivors and learned from their powerful stories of disappearance, survival, and the long pursuit of truth and justice. Meeting Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo offered another perspective on the decades-long search for missing children and the determination of families to recover identity, truth, and justice.

At Parque de la Memoria, we explored the role of art in keeping memory alive — showing how creative expression can document histories, honour victims, and carry survivors’ stories across generations.

What we take from Buenos Aires is not only knowledge, but new relationships, shared experiences, and opportunities for future collaboration.

For Nobody’s Listening, building connections between communities affected by genocide and mass atrocities is at the heart of our work — learning from one another, sharing experiences, and turning memory into solidarity and action.

From Sinjar to Buenos Aires — different histories, connected memories, and a shared commitment to ensure these voices are never forgotten.

From Sinjar to Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires was more than a visit for Nobody’s Listening. It was an opportunity to connect experiences, learn from those who have lived through mass atrocities, and build relationships that can shape future collaboration.

At the Memory Studies Association Conference, we presented The Forgotten Voices of Sinjar and explored how survivor testimony, art, and immersive storytelling can bring the Yazidi Genocide into spaces of education, memory, and international dialogue.

At ESMA, we met the team and survivors and learned from their stories of disappearance, survival, and the long pursuit of truth and justice. Meeting Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo gave us another perspective on the decades-long search for missing children and the determination of families to recover identity, truth, and justice.

At Parque de la Memoria, we experienced how art can transform memory into a living space for reflection, education, and remembrance — reinforcing our belief in the power of art to document and carry survivors’ stories across generations.

What we take from Buenos Aires is not only knowledge, but new relationships, shared experiences, and opportunities for collaboration.

For Nobody’s Listening, this is essential: connecting communities affected by genocide and mass atrocities, creating space to learn from one another, and turning separate histories into a stronger network of memory, solidarity, and action.

Nobody’s Listening | MSA Buenos Aires 2026 (Arabic bellow)

At the 10th International Conference of the Memory Studies Association (MSA) in Buenos Aires, Nobody’s Listening shared the stories of Yazidi survivors through art and immersive virtual reality.

In this video, we reflect on bringing the project to Argentina and hear from participants who experienced the exhibition.

From Argentina’s memory of dictatorship and enforced disappearances to the Yazidi genocide, these stories remind us of the power of art to preserve memory, amplify survivors’ voices, and ensure that histories of mass atrocities are never forgotten.

Tomorrow marks the 12th anniversary of the Yazidi genocide.

On 3 August 2014, ISIS launched a systematic genocidal campaign against the Yazidi community in Sinjar. Twelve years later, thousands remain missing, while many survivors continue to live with the consequences of displacement, loss, and captivity. The struggle for justice, recognition, and dignity continues.

Since the launch of Nobody’s Listening, we have worked to keep survivors’ voices present and bring their stories to the world through art, testimony, and virtual reality. We have taken survivors’ experiences and memories to parliaments, the United Nations, universities, museums, and cultural institutions around the world, because we believe that memory is not simply about remembering the past — it is a responsibility to the present and the future.

12 years on, survivors’ voices still need to be heard, our memories still need to be preserved, and justice still needs to be achieved.

غداً تحلّ الذكرى الثانية عشرة للإبادة الجماعية بحق الإيزيديين.

We are honoured that Nobody’s Listening continues its journey in Australia, where our immersive VR experience is presented alongside Drawn from Pain, Written from Truth at the New England Regional Art Museum NERAM in Armidale.

Together, these exhibitions stand as a powerful act of remembrance, preserving the memory of the Yazidi Genocide, amplifying the voices of survivors, and transforming testimony into a lasting call for justice, dignity, and accountability.

My deepest gratitude to the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM), the entire exhibition team, and especially Rachael Parsons for making this collaboration possible. I also want to honour ⒶⓂⒺⓇⒶ𓆩♡𓆪ⒶⓁⒾ and S♡ u♡ a♡ d Sᥫ᭡mᥫ᭡o whose courageous artworks and personal stories ensure that the truth endures.

The Forgotten Voices of Sinjar in Geneva

We were honoured to bring the Forgotten Voices of Sinjar to Women on the Frontline in Geneva, held alongside the 61st Session of the UN Human Rights Council.

Through Nobody’s Listening: The Forgotten Voices of Sinjar, Thikran Mato, a Yazidi genocide survivor and Director of Nobody’s Listening, alongside .ajo, a Yazidi genocide survivor, artist, presented the Nobody’s listening award immersive VR experience and a collection of artworks that brought the Yazidi experience to an international audience. Together, they demonstrated how survivor-led storytelling, art, and immersive technology can preserve memory, restore dignity, and transform lived experiences into a global call for justice and the prevention of future atrocities.

A particularly powerful moment was Sepan Ajo’s personal testimony, as she shared her journey of survival and how art became a powerful tool for healing, resilience, and advocacy. Her voice stood alongside artists and survivors from Sudan, South Sudan, Afghanistan, Syria, Iran, Gaza, Ukraine, Lebanon, and Haiti, highlighting the strength of women confronting conflict and displacement across the world.

We are honored to announce that Nobody’s Listening has been invited to present at the 10th Annual Conference of the Memory Studies Association in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
For the first time in Latin America, the Yazidi experience will be explored through Virtual Reality, immersive storytelling, and art as tools for memorialisation, education, and atrocity prevention.
Presented by Thikran Mato, Director of Nobody’s Listening and Yazidi Genocide survivor, alongside Ryan D’Souza, Founder and Curator, the session explores how survivor testimony can be transformed into immersive experiences that preserve memory, challenge indifference, and open new spaces for dialogue on justice, democracy, and human rights.
Over the past years, Nobody’s Listening has brought these experiences to parliaments, universities, schools, institutes, and public audiences across Iraq, Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia, and beyond, creating spaces where memory is not only preserved, but experienced.

As part of Peace Festival Week in Australia, we were honored to collaborate with the R2P Student Coalition for a meaningful event(The Forgotten Voices of Yazidis) at the The University of Queensland combining dialogue and immersive storytelling.
Thikran Mato joined as a speaker in a panel discussion alongside Jeffrey Sizemore , Melissa Curley , and Winnifred Louis , where conversations focused on raising awareness, prevention, and the role of Nobody’s Listening in amplifying survivors’ stories and advancing justice and accountability.
Participants also engaged with the Nobody’s listening award-winning VR experience presented by a group of volunteers from the Yazidi community in Toowoomba. Through this immersive journey, audiences were able to connect more deeply with the lived realities of Yazidi survivors.
By bringing together storytelling, technology, and dialogue, we continue working to ensure that these voices are not only heard but felt, remembered, and acted upon.

Following a series of awareness and educational activities organized across Australia in 2025, Nobody’s Listening continues its efforts to raise awareness about the Yazidi Genocide and the importance of preventing such crimes in the future.

“The Forgotten Voices of Yazidis” will bring participants into an immersive VR experience sharing the testimonies and stories of Yazidi survivors. The VR experience will be presented by a group of volunteers from the Yazidi community in Toowoomba. The event will also include a public seminar on the current situation of the Yazidi community and ongoing efforts toward justice and accountability.
