📢 Workshop announcement: challenging militarism in education

As the government pushes careers in the armed forces, nuclear and arms industries on young people, challenging militarism in Britain's education system becomes ever more important.

This workshop at CND's upcoming conference will hear from some of those advocating for greater peace education and resisting the growing influence of arms companies in schools and universities:

Helen Griffin, CND Peace Education; Jinsella Kennaway, Executive Director of DED_ucationon, which has exposed over £2 billion worth of partnerships between arms companies and British universities; Barnaby Swonnell, university demilitarisation activist working with Yorkshire Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and local campaigners to oppose Sheffield University's involvement in the development of next-generation nuclear warheads; and Stella Swain, Youth and Student Campaigns Officer at Palestine Solidarity Campaign UKk, who works with young people and students organising for universities across the country to divest from companies complicit in Israel's genocide and apartheid.

A few pictures from our awards ceremony for Verses of Hope!

It was an honour to watch these young poets deliver such powerful poetry commemorating the 80th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Thank you to Antony Owen and Aaron Kent for judging, and to Kate Hudson for commending the poets.

We will be posting more from the event this week, including readings from the winning poets!

We were thrilled to attend the exhibition last Wednesday of photographs produced by Morpeth Secondary Schools Students at the Four Corners Gallery on themes of peace, conflict at protest.

It is incredible to see such platforms which give space for students to express themselves and we hope to see more of them in the future!

A popular legend in Japan states that if you fold 1000 paper cranes, you will be granted one wish. Sadako Sasaki, a young child just 1 mile away from the hypocentre of the Hiroshima bomb, began folding 1000 paper cranes while in the hospital due to radiation from the bomb.

Sadako's brother Masahiro Sasaki, still surviving, stated:

"Sadako's wish wasn’t concerned with such an important matter as world peace. As she folded paper cranes she wished for her parent's debts to disappear… she wished to get well soon and go home, and so on…
Fundamentally, what Sadako did - having wishes and folding paper cranes - is within reach of anyone, and orizuru have become a tool for all to express a common wish for peace. It is a simple story. Please let people
know how the movement started."
