What needs to change to get cancer patients treated on time?

At Labour Party Conference, our Policy and Campaigns Lead Gareth Lloyd-Johnson put the 62-day cancer treatment target directly to a panel discussing the National Cancer Plan.

The NHS has not met the target nationally for more than a decade. The new plan commits to achieving it by March 2029 – but our cancer clock shows there is a long way to go to reach 85%, when only 71% of patients are treated on time at the moment.

We’ll keep asking the questions that matter and making the case for the workforce, technology and accountability needed to give cancer patients timely access to world-class treatment.

“Ministers make national promises but do not have the levers to ensure delivery.”

That is the warning from cancer experts, including Professor Pat Price, writing in The Lancet Oncology.

A recent correction to the National Cancer Plan highlights why accountability matters.
The plan originally stated that £70million for 28 new radiotherapy machines would enable 27,500 more patients to receive treatment each year. This has now been corrected to 27,500 more treatments; meaning the funding will benefit fewer individual patients than the original wording suggested.

Professor Pat Price warns:

“The correction to the cancer plan shows exactly why conflating patients with treatments is not a trivial mistake; it can dramatically overstate how many new treatments will help and lead to dangerous underinvestment.”

And crucially:

“Ensuring cancer patients get their treatment on time needs to be a priority, and that is why we are calling for accountability to be enshrined in legislation.”

Cancer patients need more than promises. They need delivery and accountability.

📺 This Monday, we’ll be watching Panorama: Cancer Before 50: Why Is It Rising?

As the programme explores why more people are being diagnosed with cancer at younger ages, there’s another important question: is our cancer system equipped to meet changing and growing demand?

For our campaign, that question is critical.

We need a National Cancer Plan that translates ambition into timely treatment for patients - backed by the workforce, clinical expertise, capacity and technology needed to deliver it.

Because whatever the future pattern of cancer looks like, patients need to be able to access the right treatment at the right time.

This Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month, we’re proud to highlight three important ways Radiotherapy UK is supporting people affected by gynaecological cancers:

🧡 Developing new internal radiotherapy resources, through a project led by Therapeutic Radiographer Alison Bowman, to help patients better understand their treatment.

🧡 Partnering with the Grace Project, represented by our Projects Manager Lynsey Rice, which is working to improve how people make informed decisions about consent for radiotherapy for gynaecological cancer.

🧡 Providing free, trusted patient information about the late and side effects of radiotherapy for cervical and womb cancer.

Clear, accessible information can make a real difference when people are navigating cancer treatment. We’re committed to helping patients understand their radiotherapy and feel better informed about their care.

The government’s new National Cancer Board met for the first time yesterday, tasked with scrutinising progress on the National Cancer Plan and driving improvements in cancer care.

Health economist Anita Charlesworth has been appointed independent Co-Chair, working alongside Mark Cubbon, Trust Chief Executive of Manchester University NHS Foundation.

Strong leadership and accountability matter, because there is a significant challenge ahead.

The government is aiming for at least 80% of patients to begin treatment within the 62-day cancer standard by March 2027. The latest figures, for July, show national performance at just 71.2%.

With that deadline approaching, progress remains well short of where it needs to be.

We welcome the renewed focus on accountability and wish the new Board well. But patients now need to see measurable improvements in timely access to treatment.

Radiotherapy must be part of that conversation.

We continue to call for an independent radiotherapy advisory group, rooted in clinical experience, to provide expert scrutiny and advice on how radiotherapy services can deliver the capacity, innovation and access patients need.

A new Board creates an opportunity for greater accountability. What matters now is whether that translates into better care for patients.

Delays to cancer treatment have consequences.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, our Chair, Professor Pat Price, highlighted the devastating human impact of cancer waiting times.

Around 9,000 patients a month are not starting their treatment on time. And with every four-week delay potentially associated with up to a 10% reduction in survival, these waits matter.

Behind every statistic is a person waiting for treatment, and a family waiting with them. Patients deserve better. And these delays are not inevitable.

We need urgent action to get cancer treatment back on track.
