Question from one of our members from a few days ago:

Hosepipe ban starts tomorrow. Any advice?

A:

Give everything a good soaking tonight. Fill up any water butts and whatever large containers you have if you have a large garden to avoid carrying water far.

Transfer things from small pots to larger ones and add water retention crystals if you have them or can get them. (B&Q, garden centres). Don’t need to water everything every day. Established plants and shrubs will have reached deep. Prioritise vulnerable plants.
Mulch with anything you have to hand after a good watering: old bags of compost, the bottom of your compost bin or leaf mould bin . Don’t worry if it is not fully rotted down.

Move pots to the shadiest place you can and group them together.

Save any water you can- from washing veg, water you run waiting for hot water to come through, water from cooking, washing up water if you use plant- based washing up liquid and not too greasy.

Join us for a visit to Kew Gardens with added bonus of viewing the Henry Moore exhibition, ‘Monumental Nature’. This event is open to everyone whether you’re an IG member - or not. We will meet outside Kew Gardens Station on Friday 7th August so that we can walk to the gate together. We will aim for a 4pm arrival as ticket prices are significantly cheaper after that time. Hello everyone

We wanted to let you know that our Plant Sale on Sunday was a great success.

A huge thank you to all those of you who donated plants, made cakes, helped with setting up or clearing up or throughout the day and of course all of you who came along to buy plants, who brought friends and family or added to the success of the event.

Another big thank you goes to our friends at the Olden Garden for letting us use their beautiful space with a special mention to their Chair Charles who lent us SumUp card readers and showed us novices how to work them.

Thanks to to our friends from Octopus Community Plant Nursery who brought a fantastic selection of plants, mainly edibles which added another dimension to the event, and finally to George Scott who did sterling work promoting Islington in Bloom and encouraging people to enter by giving away free plug plants.

We hope you all enjoyed yourselves. The cold weather may have reduced numbers attending a bit but frankly if it did it was a blessing as those of you who came last year will know that it was a bit of a crush!

We decided to lower prices this year too- maybe we could have charged more but since our primary aim is to encourage people to garden we thought this was the best call.

A final thank you to you all and do get thinking about what we could do to make next year’s event even better. You can let us know your thoughts by sending us an email: [email protected]

FYI: In the Summer newsletter we will let everyone know the total taken on the day and how much was donated to this year’s chosen charities (Copenhagen St Food Bank, Harington Scheme and St Joseph’s Hospice in Hackney).

We wanted to let you know that our Plant Sale on Sunday was a great success.

Join us for a coach trip to Benton End, Suffolk on Thursday 18th June 2026

Dear supporters

This year we are delighted to have secured a guided tour of the newly restored and revived walled garden at Benton End in Suffolk.

Benton End was home to The East Anglian School of painting and Drawing & its founders: artist-plantsman Cedric Morris & artist Arthur Lett-Haines.

The house is not open, but you can read more about it on the Garden Museum website. The tour starts at 3pm.

Before that we thought retail therapy and lunch at Perrywood Tiptree would be a pleasant addition to the day, as it is on the way to Benton End.

Perrywood are an independent, family owned group of garden centres and nurseries run by the Bourne family in Essex and Suffolk. You can read all about them on the Perrywood website. NB:card only payments in the cafes.

This is a first-come, first-served event. There is limited capacity for this tour. Islington Gardeners members have priority booking for the first two weeks until Wednesday 6th May. IG members can also book a place for their plus one during this time. After 6th May, we will then open the trip to non-members.

Join us at the Islington Gardeners’ plant sale on Sunday 10th May 2-4 pm at Olden Community Garden, Whistler Street N5 1NH. We look forward to seeing you there and although we are praying for a dry and sunny day... the event will happen rain or shine.

Good to know...

The usual homemade refreshments will be available including scones and cake.

Oh yes, and please bring bags for your plant purchases.

Hello everyone

A BIG THANK YOU for your support over the past year.

There’s much more to come in 2026. Our first event will be An Evening With Pioneering Urban Gardener John Little, Seed Swap and AGM at St Mary’s Church (downstairs in the South Crypt) on Upper Street in the heart of Islington on Wednesday 14th January, 6-7.30pm.

Dates for Your Diaries

Wednesday 11th February: This year our Winter garden visit will be to Osterley Park and House. We will travel there by public transport. Full details TBA. This event is for members only.

Wednesday 8th April: Tree Walk around Highbury with Paul Wood. Full details TBA.

Sunday 10th May: Our annual plant sale at Olden Garden. As always, we will need plants to sell and help on the day. Stand by for full details.

Just announced!

Full details are now available for our Evening with John Little, Seed Swap and AGM. It takes place on Wednesday 14th January, 6-7.30pm at St Mary’s Church on Upper Street in Islington. It is free to attend.

There will be wine and nibbles and it looks to be a good event. We’re excited and we really hope you will join us.

Please note that the correct date is WEDNESDAY 14th JANUARY!
