Waltham Forest Migrant Action statement:

‘What is happening in Belfast is horrifying - but sadly not surprising.

Violent race riots don’t just erupt out of nowhere.

They are the result of decades of hostile environment and incessant racist, anti-migrant media and political rhetoric, that is now being fuelled by online misinformation and far-right agitators who seek to tear our communities apart.

We stand in solidarity with everyone who has been affected by violent events in Belfast - and with everyone, particularly migrants, in our community.

We believe in a world where everyone – regardless of their immigration status – is safe, welcome, supported and treated with dignity and respect.’

💥WOW! 💥 WE DID IT!!! 💥

Huge thank you to Aimee, Misba, Jazmyn, Safiiyyah & Anne who walked the 10K alongside thousands of others raising funds and awareness for access to justice 🌻

The weather forecast had announced showers - but all we saw was warm sunshine and good vibes! ☀️

Massive thank you also to everyone who has donated so far - we're nearly half way there! 🫶

🙏 Please help us raise the full amount of our London Legal Walk fundraiser - every penny you donate will go straight to supporting our work providing free immigration and welfare advice to migrants in our community.

This year, for Refugee Week (15 -
21 June), we are screening ‘Dreamers’ – the story of two Nigerian migrants who dare to imagine a vibrant future outside of their confinement at a British immigration removal centre.

The film, which explores intersecting themes of migrant and gender justice, is a powerful ode to resilience, solidarity, and love in a hostile environment.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion on the themes of migration, anti-migrant policy, increase in immigration raids, detentions and deportations, LGBTQ+ rights, solidarity and community.

Confirmed speakers:

🔸Eiri Ohtani (Director, Right to Remain)
🔸Dr Naoise Murphy (Q***r Migrant Pride Fest, Waltham Forest Anti-Raids Network)
🔸Marcelo Hart-Camus (Mayor of WF, Cllr High Street)

Last night, we joined members of Waltham Forest Citizens at the Accountability Assembly at .

We presented our collective campaign demands to representatives from Waltham Forest Green Party Forest and Waltham Forest Labour - the Conservative candidate pulled out at the 11th hour.

We heard from various organisations about the living wage campaign, housing, migration and safer parks, and the changes they want to see as a community.

We heard from Furnishing Futures about their support to survivors of domestic abuse who have been rehoused into completely empty, unfurnished social housing and their work as part of the Five Basics campaign.

We know that temporary accommodation is also a major challenge for migrants and refugees, and while progress has been made locally, we need to continue fighting to make temporary accommodation safer, healthier, and truly temporary.

With colleagues from St Barnabas, Walthamstow, we asked candidates to commit to supporting migrant justice and ending Council complicity in all immigration raids.

Find out how you can help us keep migrant justice on their agenda & ask your local candidates to pledge their support 🔗 in comments ⬇️

As we begin a new year, we know that it's likely to present us with some new challenges. In fact, it's already showing clear signs.

So before we fully delve into 2026, let's take a moment to reflect and celebrate what we achieved in 2025 - in what is an increasingly difficult and hostile environment.

💥 We helped more people than ever before with immigration and welfare advice

💥 We recruited an L3 immigration, a welfare adviser and five new trustees

💥 We campaigned against the anti-migrant policies, spoke out against immigration raids in our community and fought the far-right.

💥 We worked closely with national coalitions Citizens UK and Together With Refugees.

💥 We hosted some amazing events: a poetry night for Refugee Week, a film screening and the beautiful music event Connections in Sound to mark International Migrants Day.

Thank you to everyone who supported us.

2026, we ready for you! And we look forward to building solidarity with migrant communities and with each other throughout this year.
