Sea Cadets kicked off British Science Week (6-15 March) with hands‑on STEM excitement, as Southampton Juniors hosted a special evening of activities on 9 March. Cadets explored buoyancy, engineering and ocean science through interactive stations including balancing boats, carrying cargo, creating ‘oceans in a bottle’, and even stepping into maritime engineering through a VR experience. The event formed part of our wider commitment to making STEM accessible, practical and fun for young people.

The evening also celebrated the growing success of CREST Awards across Sea Cadets, with 836 certificates achieved in 2025 alone. Each STEM proficiency activity contributes toward modules for the CREST SuperStar Award, helping cadets develop curiosity, critical‑thinking and confidence as they investigate the science behind life at sea. Junior Sea Cadet Instructors and volunteers continue to play a vital role in delivering these sessions, inspiring cadets to think like scientists and engineers.

Looking ahead, units nationwide will continue to embrace British Science Week and its theme, 'What's your curiosity?' with activities that bring STEM to life – from understanding navigation and propulsion to exploring emerging technologies such as digital maritime skills.

Southampton’s successful Juniors evening is a brilliant example of how STEM engagement strengthens our programme and supports young people’s future pathways.
