Katherine Low Settlement

Katherine Low Settlement At the heart of Battersea since 1924. We are a much-loved, busy charity that has been at the heart of the community in Battersea, London, since 1924.

We work to reduce poverty and isolation and bring the community together. Our core programmes support older people, children, young people and their families from refugee backgrounds and newly-arrived adults learning English: over 500 people a week visit our building. We campaign for social change and we partner with other charities and communities to help them to thrive in the wider community. It’s all go at Katherine Low!

What a fantastic Refugee Week celebration! 🌍🧡

We welcomed over 60 members, volunteers, and staff for a wonderful picnic filled with dance, face painting, great food, theatre and lots of smiles.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the day so special and to Wandsworth Council for supporting the event.

One student had been coming to class for weeks but rarely spoke in English.

Then another student guessed the wrong word. And she corrected them. She knew it all along. She just needed the space to feel safe enough to say it.

That is what the Conversation Club is for.

Sarah has been volunteering at KLS since January 2025, supporting adults from refugee backgrounds to build confidence in English. She came to us while studying for her teaching qualification. She is still here.

"Every young person has a mental list of adults who think they're interesting, funny, clever and important. I just want to be one more adult on that list."

Brigid has been volunteering at KLS Senior Club for nearly five years. She helps 11 to 13 year olds with maths homework, gets beaten at chess on a regular basis, and was recently recognised with a Jack Petchey Foundation Leadership Award for her work.

She says the award was not really the point. Showing up every week is the point.

It has been a brilliant Volunteers Week. If any of this sounds like something you would want to be part of, we would love to hear from you.

This Volunteers' Week, we celebrated the incredible volunteers who make our Elders Programme such a welcoming, supportive and vibrant community with a volunteer lunch.

Whether you're serving lunch at our much-loved Lunch Club, helping someone gain confidence with technology, supporting creative activities, driving connections through conversation, or simply offering a friendly smile and listening ear, you help make KLS feel like family.

Your kindness, patience and commitment help older people in Battersea stay connected, active and valued. Through your generosity, friendships flourish, confidence grows, and loneliness is reduced.

From all of us at Katherine Low Settlement – and from every member whose week is brighter because of your support – thank you for helping our community grow together.

"Seeing that moment when something clicks."

Filip is a Digital Champion in our TechUp programme. One person he supported booked surgery online for the first time. Another found accessible transport routes they didn't know existed.

Small things. Huge difference.

We were thrilled to welcome a group of children from Thomas's Battersea to our Elders Lunch Club recently. 💙

They spent time serving lunch, chatting with members, and sharing stories, conversation, and plenty of laughter. Their enthusiasm and kindness brought smiles to everyone in the room.

Opportunities like these build meaningful connections between generations, and it was wonderful to see everyone enjoying each other's company. A huge thank you to the children and staff from Thomas's Battersea. We value our longstanding and thriving partnership.

It's Volunteers Week, and we just want to say thank you.

To everyone giving their time to KLS across our Elders, Future Foundations and Community Learning programmes: it matters more than we can say in a caption.

A blooming welcome on Orville Road! 🌸🌿

Thanks to the generous donation from a kind neighbour, KLS is looking brighter than ever with beautiful new planters filled with vibrant red geraniums.

A huge well done to our Age Well Battersea gardening members, who did a fantastic job planting and arranging everything.

We kicked off something exciting today 🚀

We met with Dr Yuwei Lin at to explore how we can create real opportunities for the KLS community and Roehampton students through volunteering and live briefs.

And what a setting for it—the Roehampton campus was absolutely beautiful. A great backdrop for fresh thinking, shared ambition, and the kind of conversations that feel like they can lead somewhere meaningful.

This one already feels like it has momentum. Watch this space 👀
