Zucman is spot on.

Extreme wealth is a threat to democracy & "it is time to break decisively with the perverse logic in which retirees, the poor or immigrants are expected to balance the budget, while the rich live tax-free in a parallel society."
📖

There is a fundamental tension between extreme wealth and the very possibility of democracy. That’s because extreme wealth is always an extreme power

Great, we have a trillionaire now. So, when does it trickle down again? now.

Elon Musk has just become the world’s first trillionaire. What does that say about our economy and how do we fix it?

The UK does have a 2‑tier tax system. A pay‑what‑you‑want deal for the super‑rich & a make‑up‑the‑gap deal for everyone else. But Reform don’t have a plan to fix it.

This policy just distracts from their billionaire backers by pitting low‑paid workers against each other.

Even taking the policy on its own terms, sectors with a higher density of migrant employment— like health and social care, crucial to a well-functioning society— have plenty of issues that take precedence before employers' National Insurance contributions.

This policy design shows a total lack of knowledge about how taxation can fix the real problems facing businesses and people. Given recent events, this sort of rhetoric is also irresponsible and puts people across the UK in real danger.

Anyone genuinely interested in improving lives should be talking about tackling inequality by taxing extreme wealth, to unlock £billions in investment to create jobs, support growth, build affordable housing, improve infrastructure & get on with delivering on what matters.

Why are our public services struggling?

"...while 99% of us are paying, in total, 40% to 50% tax on our incomes, billionaires are paying a rate equating to 25% at most. As for wealth, the situation is much worse."

A 2% levy on fortunes above £100m – with no exemptions – could begin to reverse decades of rising inequality

It's a question that could decide the next PrimeMinister. What do Makerfield residents want?

Well surprise, surprise, polling shows that much like the rest of the country, a majority support:

✅ A Wealth Tax to properly fund struggling public services
✅ & a cap on political donations to stop the super‑rich buying our democracy

Whenever the public is asked, the answer is the same. It’s time the government acted.
