We met Justin around 2013/14 after Pempeople had just won a contract to deliver a bike ride scheme throughout the whole borough of Lambeth Council . As much as we knew many, bike mechanics, we decided that it was best that we train somebody local who came from the estate,around Loughborough Junction because, again, as many of you know, we have an issue about disadvantaged areas where they’re not given particular appropriate training or opportunities

Justin, who came on board and introduced the project to the local area. He was very interested in fixing bikes, and we started working with him. Justin was consistent. He found it really excillarating fixing bikes, fixing his own bikes and for the many young people that he brought along and keeping off the streets and learning about manners

We then were able to acquire a garage unit on the Loughborough Estate underneath Harper House, which wasn’t being used, and we persuaded the local Almo I believe, or arms-length Member organisation, to give us the garage, which they did. We were able to put Justin in there, who managed the project.
In 2015 we totted up the project cost for@many of those who volunteered and paid for their City and Guilds accreditation

I would like to say a big thank you to Justin because, with his support, we were able to go around the borough fixing bikes and doing much, much more.
The project was highly recommended by the London Transport awards for the most “Innovative Transport project”

1 Year on from the passing of Sam the Wheels

As a community the power is in our hands, some of us might not realise it but others do, over 15 years ago, we set out to create a community space, just to hold dance classes and keep young people off the street, it was a challenge.
Challenge one finding a space that the churches hadn’t taken over
Challenge two initially getting the young people together as they were tired of projects that were here today gone tomorrow some projects only lasted weeks
Challenge three The council and its officer claimed it as a statutory service whilst they had the money
Challenge Four It was no longer a statutory service after the riots of 2011
Challenge five Those who could help would help if you didn’t do it their way
Challenge six if you did get funded. Simply having one under aged young person who came with their siblings annulled your funding 9so at times we just did it without the funding
Challenge seven. Find a hall and the church comes knocking and you lose your space
Challenge Eight those who could support you wanted your sh^£ for free and they are still doing that till today
Challenge Nine There were people who lived by Prince 2 methodology and didn’t really that you can insert unknown quantities during each stage
Challenge Ten It’s not about the language in the application , you need to read the damn question
Challenge 11 Some people are using the negative aspects of the Census to get money for themselves rather than addressing the real issues

Challenges

Residents and community organisations have identified several concerns:

* Rising house prices and rents.
* Displacement of long-established residents and businesses.
* Loss of affordable workspaces.
* Pressure on existing community facilities.
* Risk that local people do not benefit equally from new jobs and investment.
* Concerns about whether affordable housing targets will be fully achieved. These issues have also been reflected in public debate around regeneration in neighbouring areas such as Elephant and Castle.
