CONDOLENCE MESSAGE ON THE PASSING OF HIS EXCELLENCY, ALHAJI IBRAHIM IDRIS, CON - FORMER GOVERNOR OF KOGI STATE (2003-2012)
On behalf of the Board, Members, and Secretariat of the Global Governors Children Council, we extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of His Excellency, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, to the Government and good people of Kogi State, and to the Federal Republic of Nigeria over the painful transition of our beloved father, elder statesman and former Governor.
We received with profound shock the news of his passing in the United Kingdom on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at the age of 77. dbab
Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, fondly called "Ibro", was a rare breed of leader, businessman and philanthropist whose nearly nine years as Governor of Kogi State from 2003 to January 2012 remain the longest democratic tenure in the history of the State. He was a detribalized Nigerian, a peace-builder and a father figure whose administration was associated with landmark projects including the Greater Lokoja Water Scheme, Lokoja International Market, Confluence Stadium, and the State Specialist Hospital.
His leadership style, marked by humility, generosity and commitment to people-oriented governance, laid a solid foundation for the growth and unity of Kogi State. As children of Governors past and present, we particularly celebrate him as "Baba Kogi" - a title that reflects not just his age, but his enduring paternal role in the political family of Kogi State.
At this moment of grief, we align with the three-day mourning period declared by His Excellency Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and his directive for flags to fly at half-mast in honour of this colossus. dbab
We pray that Almighty God forgives his shortcomings, grants him an entenal rest , and grants his immediate family, his children and grandchildren, the Government of Kogi State under Governor Ododo, former Governor Yahaya Bello, and all Kogites, the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.
Adieu, Your Excellency.
