British sculptor and author Matthew Spender has died aged 81. A marvellously generous, affectionate and candid person, Matthew was the son of Isherwood’s lifelong friend Stephen Spender, the English poet and critic. In 2017, Matthew delivered the second Isherwood-Bachardy Lecture, which focused on the relationship between Isherwood, Spender and Auden in the 1920s and ‘30. A recording of it can be heard here https://m.soundcloud.com/thehuntington/isherwood-auden-and-spender-before-the-second-world-war

Isherwood and Bachardy began a relationship on Valentine’s Day 1953. “The encounter of Kitty and Dobbin was and is such a miracle... The chances against were about the same as those of a flying saucer from another galaxy finding the earth.” Isherwood, letter to Bachardy, 2/15/65.
