Nature can seem cruel at times but there’s always a reason behind what can seem like wanton cruelty. When there’s a poorly juvenile, other adults often mob and peck them. They fear the poorly ones will attract predators and their own young will be vulnerable. They will also kill other juveniles as they are competing for food. Their primary objective is to rear their own young to become healthy adults.

A kind member of staff, at Hampton Court, intervened to save this one. He’s now on the road to recovery - both eyes saved.

The season of magpie babies is already here .

Please, look around. Any baby bird on the street needs help. They are too young to live independently, to eat independently, they need to be rescued.
There are plenty of cats, foxes and other predators.

Apologies for the lack of posts. When our rehabbers are at their busiest they don’t have time to photograph their patients. However, this post shows that, sometimes, with the right intervention, a corvid on the brink of death can be turned around in a matter of days. The photos tell the story. The magpie was picked up from an allotment in East London; she was cold and shutting down. After she was gently warmed up she was given formula and antibiotics. It became apparent that she had a respiratory problem but she responded well to antibiotics. Within 24hrs she was on the mend and while being held in a box - her cage was being cleaned - she made her bid for freedom. Rehabbers never have their windows open! Within a few days she should be good to go.

This dear little magpie was brought to a rehabber in a very weak condition. She had been pecked by crows around her eyes. There was blood, both, in her eyes and dripping from her beak. However, after some heat and rest she started to liven up and within 24 hours she was standing. Still a long way to go but her uncertain future now looks a lot more promising. Such resilient birds.

Today, four baby magpies were rushed into our care. Their nest was accidentally destroyed during a rescue mission to help a cat stuck up a tree. In the rescuer’s speed to help the cat no thought was given to nesting birds. The maggies will thrive in our care but nothing beats being raised by mum.

Where there’s a will there’s a way.
Many of our finders are pretty amazing. This one couldn’t find help in Birmingham so they brought to London and delivered to Maciek. Now receiving the help he needs.

Last night we were called to a crow that was trapped between two fences. It was dark and clearly going to be a challenging rescue so we left and returned in the morning. We knew the crow was safe, from foxes, but that didn’t stop me from having a sleepless night.

Many rescues are dependent on cooperation and this was in hospital grounds where the staff were exceptionally helpful. They were very busy but the trapped bird was stressing their patients and we were all invested in helping this poor crow, who the staff had named Coco Chanel. With the maintenance staff providing a long ladder and my fellow rescuer being braver than me he scaled the three metre fence and pulled up the crow who seemed none the worse for her ordeal. However, I took her home to check her over and she ate a plate of dog food. I returned her later in the day.

Please look out for sick crows on the street. There seems an awful lot coming our way. If in doubt seek advice. Even if you’re not local to us, London Wildlife Protection 07909 795064 will offer remote advice. This little one appeared malnourished but she’s now thriving with a rehabber.
