Today we pause to remember and honour ANZAC Day – commemorated each year on 25th April. It marks the anniversary of the Gallipoli landings in 1915, when the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC), alongside British and other Allied forces, landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula during the First World War.

The campaign itself was a joint Allied effort led by the British, aimed at securing a sea route to Russia and knocking the Ottoman Empire out of the war. British troops fought alongside the ANZACs in extremely harsh and unforgiving conditions.

Although the campaign ultimately ended in withdrawal, the bravery, endurance, and mateship shown by all involved became a defining legacy for Australia and New Zealand, and remains an important part of shared military history with Britain.

ANZAC Day has since become a time to remember not only those who fought at Gallipoli, but all Australian and New Zealand service personnel who have served and sacrificed in conflicts around the world.
Today we alongside our friends and comrades from Australia and New Zealand, reflecting on the shared history and sacrifices made alongside British forces.

Lest We Forget.
