Today, on World Humanitarian Day, we recognise the courage, compassion and dedication of humanitarian workers who stand alongside communities facing conflict, displacement, hunger, drought and disaster.

Humanitarian action is more than providing assistance. It is about protecting dignity, restoring hope and helping people rebuild their lives in the most challenging circumstances.

Zamzam Foundation UK was delighted to attend the British Somali Medical Association (BSMA) Post Conference Dinner last Saturday, where we had the opportunity to showcase our work, connect with Somali healthcare professionals from across the diaspora and contribute to the evening’s discussions.

Our team had a stall at the event and were pleased to speak about Zamzam Foundation’s work delivering healthcare and humanitarian support to vulnerable communities across Somalia, as well as the importance of collaboration between professionals and organisations in the diaspora and those working on the ground.

A special thank you to for organising such an inspiring event and for creating a platform that strengthens connections between Somali healthcare professionals globally.

In July, Zamzam Foundation implemented a water trucking programme in Bardere, Gedo Region, Somalia, with the support of Penny Appeal Canada , supporting communities facing severe water shortages.

Through 75 water truck deliveries, safe drinking water was provided to families in urgent need.

For these communities, this support means:
• Access to safe and clean drinking water
• Reduced risk of water-related diseases
• Improved health and wellbeing during the crisis

In 2025, our health and nutrition programmes reached a record 212,597 people across Somalia, a 17% increase from the previous year.

Despite drought, rising hunger and severe funding challenges, our teams continued to provide essential healthcare to some of Somalia's most vulnerable and hard-to-reach communities.

Our 2025 impact included:
•29,863 acutely malnourished women and young children received treatment and nutritional support.
•46,442 women received antenatal, postnatal and maternal healthcare.
•5,453 mothers gave birth with the support of trained health professionals.
•30,833 children were vaccinated.
•14,252 pregnant women received tetanus vaccinations.

Today, Zamzam operates 35 health facilities across seven regions, supported by more than 200 frontline health workers.

Behind every statistic is a mother, a child and a family whose life has been touched by access to essential healthcare.

Access to clean water can make all the difference during drought.

In 2025, 133,200 people gained access to clean water by drilling four new boreholes, providing 94 new shallow and artesian wells, and rehabilitating nine more.

Zamzam Foundation supported more than 5,100 people with health and hygiene awareness sessions and hygiene kits, helping communities protect themselves against diseases such as cholera and acute watery diarrhoea.

And with 107 water committees set up or re-established, communities are better equipped to manage and maintain their own water sources.

Since Ramadan, 410 cataract surgeries have been carried out across Banadir and Hirshabelle, helping restore sight and improve the lives of patients affected by cataracts and vision impairment.

For many people, cataract surgery can mean more than restored vision, it can mean greater independence, the ability to work, care for loved ones, and participate fully in daily life.

We are grateful to our donors and partners for helping make access to essential eye care possible for vulnerable communities across Somalia.

In July, Zamzam Foundation successfully completed the construction of six new shallow wells in Jalalaqsi, Somalia, with the support of Human Appeal Australia

These wells have now been handed over to the local community, providing improved access to clean and safe water for around 50 families benefiting approximately 300 people.

For these communities, access to clean water means:
• Safe and reliable drinking water
• Improved health and hygiene
• Greater stability for families and livelihoods

Water is life.

For many families across Somalia, access to safe water is still a daily challenge.

In displacement communities, collecting water often means long journeys each day usually carried by women and children impacting health, hygiene, and everyday life.

Zamzam Foundation’s solar-powered boreholes are helping change that. Over 10,000 households now have clean, reliable water closer to home. For people like Fatima Ahmed in Baidoa, this has transformed daily life, improving health, easing daily burdens, and supporting livelihoods.

Together, we can help more families gain access to safe water, protect health, and build a stronger future.

For over 33 years, Zamzam Foundation has been building what communities in Somalia deserve: access to education, healthcare, and clean water.

So far, that means:
• 160+ schools built
• 180+ boreholes drilled
• 300+ health facilities established

In 2025 alone:
• 5 new schools across Mogadishu, Middle & Lower Shabelle, and Gedo
• 4 new health centres in hard-to-reach areas of Middle & Lower Juba and Gedo
