Join the Anglo-Brazilian Society at 14.15 on Friday, 3 July for a 90 minute private guided tour of Kew Gardens. The tour, which is limited to just 15 people, is free for ABS members, but we kindly request a £15 donation to confirm your spot. This contribution will go towards covering ABS costs and supporting our charitable giving, having recently supported the Children at Risk Foundation (CARF) and Favela Brass. Guests will also need to buy a ticket to enter Kew Gardens, but many ABS members are also members of Kew or are entitled to certain concessions.

Guests will also be able to tour Kew Gardens both before and after the guided tour, taking full advantage of the new display of 30 monumental works from Henry Moore. There are also more than 90 of Moore’s smaller-scale works, including sculpture, drawings, models and sketchbooks – some of which are rarely accessible to the public, to be seen at the Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art that also features an exhibition featuring botanical paintings from the Shirley Sherwood Collection to complement the perspectives explored in Moore's work. Sherwood was a good friend and a frequent visitor to Brazil.

If you are looking for something “Brazilian” to watch in the UK between World Cup games, you can catch the BBC documentary “In Search of the Beautiful Game,” by Scottish comedian Kevin Bridges, on BBC iPlayer. The documentary takes Kevin from Scotland to Brazil where he visits both Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo and learns in a number of different settings that even if under threat, the spirit of the beautiful game is still alive in the streets, in the stadiums, on the beaches and in the minds of Brazilians.

We continue our ‘Flashbacks to History’ series with a selection of photographs from our album ‘Iguassú – Triple Border’, a journey through one of South America’s most fascinating meeting points.

These images offer a glimpse into the historic region of Iguaçu and the Triple Border, an area shaped by the meeting of Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay, where geography, migration, commerce, and culture have long intersected.

During the 20th century, the region became an important point of exchange and movement, reflecting broader economic and cultural connections across South America. The landscapes and communities captured in these photographs reveal not only the significance of the Iguaçu Falls themselves, but also the evolving relationships between the people and nations connected by this shared frontier.

Scenes such as these highlight how border regions can become spaces of interaction, coexistence, and transformation, shaped by both local traditions and international influences over time.

We continue our ‘Flashbacks to History’ series with photographs from our album of the 'Gymnasio Anglo Brazileiro' in São Paulo, dating from 1907–1909 💫

These images offer a glimpse into an example of early 20th-century education in Brazil, a period marked by growing efforts to modernise schooling and expand access to more structured and formalised curricula.

Institutions such as this reflected broader intellectual and cultural exchanges of the time, particularly the influences that European and Anglo educational models could have on education in urban centres like São Paulo.

Stay tuned for more from the archive - and as you look at these images, consider: how do you think educational spaces shape the kinds of knowledge and identities that are produced within them?
