After being diagnosed with cancer, each patient endures a journey that is riddled with up and down emotions.⠀
No, not every patient accepts their cancer diagnosis as soon as they find out they have cancer. In fact, there are a few stages that most patients go through mentally.⠀
Stage 1: Denial. Some patients may insist that they feel nothing is wrong with them. In some cases, they may deny reality because they have present issues to worry about, whether it’s school or taking care of their family financially. Cancer causes an unwanted disruption.⠀
Stage 2: Anger. Many patients sometimes feel as if it is their fault. Since there is no definitive cause of cancer, many patients ask the question, “Why me?” There is a feeling of unfairness that some patients experience.⠀
Stage 3: The “If only...” stage centers around cancer patients wondering if their diagnosis could have been prevented. If personally they could have done something different. If they had gotten diagnosed early, would their body respond better to chemo. These questions can haunt cancer patients after a diagnosis.⠀
Stage 4: Sadness & Depression. It is normal to feel sadness as a cancer patient. Many patients undergo a grueling stretch of chemotherapy that causes them to miss out on many things that may bring them joy. It’s hard for patients to be positive all the time while fatigued, nauseated, and in pain.
