A big thank you to a lovely member of staff at Thornton Heath station in South London, who helped our volunteers yesterday to rescue this pigeon trapped behind netting.

The pigeon must have squeezed in through the gaps on the sides of this incorrectly installed netting, and couldn't find his way out. He
kept flapping, moving and hiding. Eventually we were able to guide him to an opening made big enough for him to get out. Thankfully we avoided damaging the netting or the palaver of calling in the contractors to open and reseal it. That's never an easy job.

Fly safe Mr Pigeon! And stay away from these death traps...

We have a network of independent rehabbers who specialise in different species. They are working extremely hard and spending a lot on supplies. They need all the help they can get, especially at this time of the year.

This week we are raising funds for Jo, who looks after a wide variety of patients, as seen in the photos.

Please consider supporting Jo and donate directly by PayPal:

Your support will be much appreciated and will help yet another little soul 🙏❤️

Another duck nesting in a garden. This time in Mayfair and safely rescued by one of our volunteers. Nesting ducks, in this area have usually come from the Thames but the current is too strong to put the ducklings on the river. We will relocate the family in a nearby pond. However, if space permits we try to give them a few days with a rehabber, so that the ducklings are a little larger and stronger when released.

📣📣📣 BABY BIRDS - WHEN TO RESCUE, WHEN TO LEAVE ALONE

In the spring and summer, members of the public often pick up young birds that are simply learning to fly and don't need to be rescued.

The general rules - apart from pigeons - are:

✅ If the baby is NOT SICK / INJURED / CATTED AND THE PARENTS ARE AROUND, reuniting the baby with the parents is always the best outcome.

✅ If the baby doesn't have any feathers (hatchling) or only some (nestling) and the correct nest can be located,
please try to put the baby back in it, ONLY if you are sure parents are around.

✅ Only rescue garden bird fledglings (fully feathered young birds) if they are:

- sick/injured, or
- catted (even if not visibly injured), or
- in immediate danger (predators, traffic), or
- parents are not around (after monitoring for some time)

✅ All grounded pigeon babies / fledglings need to be picked up. It is rarely possible to put them back in the nest, they may have been pushed out for a reason and the parents will not look after them on the ground.

✅ Never release a bird that has been attacked by a cat, even if there are no injuries. Cats' saliva has bacteria that will cause septicaemia so a catted bird urgently needs preventive antibiotic treatment to survive.
