Chapter 1 of 6

Sophie Hayes Foundation began in 2011, rooted in lived experience.

Following her own experience of trafficking and exploitation, Sophie Hayes began sharing her story and raising awareness of how grooming and control can be hidden within relationships that appear safe.

Those early conversations carried an important message: survivors’ experiences must be heard, and their expertise must shape the support available to them and wider responses to modern slavery.

From the outset, Sophie Hayes Foundation brought together survivor support, research and public awareness. Over the past 15 years, our work has developed significantly, but Sophie’s experience and the voices of women survivors remain at the heart of our purpose.

On 6 October, our Big Give Women & Girls campaign will raise vital funds to take this work forward. For one week, every donation can be doubled. ⭐️

This year marks 15 years of Sophie Hayes Foundation supporting women survivors of modern slavery.

Since 2011, our work has grown from raising awareness and providing early survivor support to delivering long-term programmes centred on sustainable freedom.

Over the coming week, we will share some of the moments, learning and women’s voices that have shaped our journey.

At 12pm on 6 October, our Big Give Women & Girls campaign begins. For one week, every donation to Sophie Hayes Foundation can be doubled.💕

Our goal is to raise £10,000 and unlock a further £10,000 towards our work supporting 300 women over the coming year.

Did you know that women globally are paid around 20% less than men?🌍🤔

But pay inequality isn’t experienced equally. Gender can intersect with race, disability, age, sexual orientation and migration status - deepening inequality and increasing vulnerability to exploitation.

This International Equal Pay Day, we’re calling for equal pay, living wages and stronger protections so that every worker has the opportunity to build a secure future and to thrive. 💸💙

Softwire delivered a session to our Module 3 Employability Programme participants all about AI - what it is, how we can use it effectively and safely, and specifically how we can use it for applying for jobs or within roles, with an emphasis on being mindful of noticing AI content. 🔍💻

Reflecting on the day’s conversations on AI, one participant said that “the session has cleared some of my doubts and taught me new ways it can help me”.⭐️

A warm welcome to the 7 new members of our Lived Experience Advisory Group (LEAG)!

Last week, our new and current members began the second pilot of our LEAG Leadership Course, a 6-week course created with LEAG members for LEAG members.

“We had a wonderful time together as we launched our new year of LEAG with this course. At Sophie Hayes Foundation, we’re delighted to be working both with new members and our LEAG alumni, who will continue to advise on different strategic areas of our work”.

We are excited to share September’s Inspire Hour! 🌟

Every month, our CREW alumnae group invites an inspiring woman to join our community online and speak about their experiences, tell their story, and impart wisdom.

This month we welcomed Amy Mortlock, Senior Marketing Vice President at Shadow Dragon ( ShadowDragon ), the investigative intelligence and analysis platform designed to create a safer online environment.

This , we're shining a light on empowerment and education as prevention. Participants actively reduce the risk of re-exploitation through our programme, as well as feeling inspired to spread awareness, using their voices to make a wider difference.

We're delighted to welcome Alima Quershi as the new Chair of the Board of Trustees!

Alima brings extensive leadership experience across government, housing, and the charity sector. Her career has been defined by a deep and sustained commitment to improving outcomes for women survivors of exploitation and structural inequality. Her background spans safeguarding, trauma‑informed practice, partnership development, commissioning, governance, and systems leadership—expertise that aligns strongly with the Foundation’s mission to support women who have survived trafficking and exploitation.
