Jewish Blind & Disabled provides a life of independence, dignity and choice for any adult, from the age of 18 upwards, who is physically disabled or vision impaired. We enable this independent lifestyle via the provision of state-of-the-art mobility apartments, with 24/7 on site support from our own resident house managers.

As part of their ongoing fundraising efforts for JBD, the Tenant Fundraising Committee at Aztec House hosted an afternoon tea earlier this week.

It was a lovely afternoon, with tea and scones enjoyed by all!

Meet Ruth and Renee. Both women have macular degeneration and were finding it increasingly difficult to maintain their confidence and independence.

Looking for support, they turned to JBD's Sight Loss Support Service. Following home assessments with our Vision Rehabilitation Specialists, both Ruth and Renee were referred for waist-height guide cane training to help them navigate their surroundings more confidently.

A few weeks later, they arrived at one of our Sight Loss Support Groups with their matching guide canes in tow!

Their story shows how the right support can help people feel more confident and independent, whilst also bringing people together through shared experiences.

Earlier this year, we sent out our annual satisfaction survey to all tenants to understand how we are performing.

The survey showed consistently high tenant satisfaction across almost all service areas, with JBD continuing to outperform national averages. We are very proud of these results, particularly of how highly tenants value the support of House Managers and the maintenance team.

We recognise how important tenant voices are in shaping our services, and we have some clear areas to take forwards and improve on to ensure we are delivering the highest quality service.

Meet Mark, an attendee at one of our monthly Sight Loss Support Groups.

After Mark was diagnosed with keratoconus - a condition that distorts the shape of the cornea - his eyesight gradually declined.

A turning point came when he reached out to JBD as he needed help getting home after a surgery. That initial contact led to Mark attending one of JBD’s monthly Sight Loss Support Groups.

“I really enjoy them, I’ve met other people and learnt new things. I would never have described myself as blind before going to the group. Now I understand more – I know that in the sun, I’m blind. Other times, I’m partially sighted. Compared to most people, I’ve got terrible eyesight – but I feel lucky.”

Earlier this week, our volunteer-led Hearing Aid Clinic was held at Hilary Dennis Court.

Delivered in partnership with JDA, these clinics help tenants care for and maintain their hearing aids.

Our volunteers also took part in Hearing Loss Awareness Training delivered by JDA, learning more about the challenges faced by people with hearing loss and how to communicate effectively with hearing aid users.

Earlier this week, our Director of Fundraising, Rachel, visited Aztec House to accept a generous donation raised by tenants through activities such as bingo and afternoon teas.

The cheque presentation celebrated the building's fantastic fundraising efforts in support of JBD.

Meet Maureen, a client of our Occupational Therapy (OT) Service.

Living with osteoarthritis, Maureen was finding everyday tasks increasingly difficult, particularly navigating the uneven steps leading to her front door and getting in and out of her bath safely.

Following an assessment by one of our Occupational Therapists, a range of adaptations were recommended to help her remain independent at home. As a result, an accessible bathroom was installed, along with galvanised handrails outside her property.

Reflecting on these changes, Maureen said: "I didn't realise how much I needed some of the adaptations until they were installed."
