After discovering Eschenbach TV glasses at a Sight Loss Support Group session led by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), attendee, Stuart, was able to get back to enjoying TV and film.

That’s exactly what our Sight Loss Support Groups are about - helping people reconnect with the things they enjoy whilst maintaining their independence.

Last week, volunteer Jackie and her therapy dog, Maggie, paid a visit to Aztec House tenant, Ros.

Therapy pets are a wonderful source of comfort, companionship and joy, and Maggie certainly delivered! 🐾

The Renters’ Rights Act 2025 introduced news laws to make it easier for private tenants to keep pets - meaning more people could enjoy the companionship they bring.

Aztec House tenant, Joel, has lived in his flat for 21 years.

Joel values his independence, but over time, he noticed certain aspects of his flat were no longer meeting his needs. He was finding it increasingly difficult to access his fridge due to the position of the handle and struggled to use his oven safely. His bathroom also needed a refresh to make it easier to clean.

Accordingly, we adjusted the fridge door so the handle is now on the opposite side, improving accessibility. We upgraded his oven to a safer and more space efficient slide and hide model and also, installed a new wet room bathroom.

Joel says; "the renovations have made such a difference. It's helped make everyday tasks much easier."

This week is Diabetes Week 2026, a campaign run by Diabetes UK. This year’s theme is "Strike Out Stigma," focused on addressing common misconceptions about the causes, management and realities of diabetes.

At our recent Diabetes Demystified event we heard from a panel of experts to educate our community about diabetes. Swipe for some key takeaways from our speakers, including the idea that whilst lifestyle factors are important, people are not to blame for their diabetes.

If you want to improve your understanding of diabetes, sign up for our next event on Thursday 18th of June in Woodford at www.jbd.org/event/diabetes-demystified/ or for more info, please contact Toni on [email protected] or 020 8371 6611 ext. 620.

Last week, we hosted our third JBD-wide tenant event - Connections 2026.

It was a fantastic day bringing together JBD tenants from across all our buildings, alongside members of our wider community including volunteers, trustees and house managers.

As our Chief Executive, Lisa, explained: "It provided a meaningful opportunity to bring people together, make new connections, learn from one another, and celebrate the many different ways people contribute to life at JBD."

Thank you to everyone who helped make the day so special!
