CURE International UK Compassionate surgical care for children with treatable disabilities in developing countries.

CURE provides operations free of charge to children who are born with conditions such as clubfoot, hydrocephalus ('water on the brain'), cleft lip/palate, crooked spines and burn contractures. Since the opening our first hospital in 1998 we have seen more than 1,900,000 patients. It is estimated that there are more than 100 million children in economically challenged countries who could be cured through an operation.

When a child is born with clubfoot in the UK, North America, Europe, or many other parts of the world, it is often treated immediately, and the child will grow up with no clue they once had clubfoot. But in the countries where CURE works (Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Niger, Philippines, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe), kids born with clubfoot have few to no options to receive treatment. As a result, these kids grow up experiencing difficulty walking, painful mobility, social exclusion, and vicious rumours.

Thankfully, clubfoot IS treatable, and it's one of the most common surgeries performed at CURE hospitals! These surgeries don't just straighten a foot, but restore a child's place in their society!

Jeremy was born with a small swelling on his head. His mother, Espera, took him to see a doctor and was told nothing could be done. Because Jeremy was always so full of energy, the family hoped it wasn't serious, but over time, the swelling kept growing, and it became more and more obvious just how serious this swelling was.

After several hospitals turned them away, Jeremy was referred to a CURE Uganda clinic near his home and promptly brought to CURE Children's Hospital of Uganda. There, he had two surgeries to treat the swelling. Through it all, he became a favorite on the ward, chatting with everyone in his language, Alur, and making the whole team laugh.

Today, Jeremy is home with his mom. "I am so grateful for what CURE has done," Espera reflects. "My son's life has been changed!"

Bowed legs made walking to school painful for Fatuma, and bullies at her school gave her a cruel nickname, Wamatew, which means "the child with bowed legs." Two rounds of treatment at a district hospital brought no real improvement, and her family had nearly lost hope.

Then, a chance encounter at a wedding introduced her father to a parent whose child had been healed at CURE Malawi. "That gave us hope," Fatuma's mother remembers.

After surgery and a recovery at CURE Malawi, Fatuma's transformation speaks for itself:

"I feel really good now that I am healed! I am happy that I can now play with my friends and go to school!" Fatumma happily reports.

Today, Fatuma walks with confidence and has returned to school for good. As her mother puts it, "They used to call her names. Now they call her Fatuma."

Meet Awesome! 💚

The CURE Zimbabwe mobile clinic team met her in Tinde where she told them about the day a piece of clothing caught fire in the kitchen and landed on her.

Her burns slowly healed, but the scars tightened as they did. Now she has burn contractures that make it hard to move her hand and the pain is significant. It gets in the way of everyday life, and sometimes she’s even had to miss school.

Here's the good news. Awesome is now registered for life-changing surgery at CURE Children’s Hospital of Zimbabwe, and it won't cost her family anything.

We can't wait to see what she does next!

Lovely moments that we're reposting from the wonderful team at CURE Children’s Hospital of Zimbabwe! ✨

1. Dr Rick Gardner, a CURE International board member and pediatric orthopaedic surgeon, visited the Hospital and spent time interacting with Dylan and other children. Dr Rick also served in Zimbabwe from 2021 to 2023. During his visit, he engaged with hospital staff, collaborated with surgeons on several procedures, and took time to play with and encourage the children.

2. Nurse Mbongeni led a routine training session for nurses from UBH in the theatre. The orientation focused on preparing nurses to respond effectively to paediatric emergencies in the Post-Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU), with an emphasis on resuscitation and emergency care.

3. Thembelani smiles as his prosthesis is fitted on his left leg. CURE Zimbabwe provides prosthetic devices to improve mobility, as well as orthotic devices that provide stability, support proper alignment, and promote healthy body mechanics.

✨Mukudzei couldn't stop smiling as she tried out her new prosthetic leg in CURE Children’s Hospital of Zimbabwe's Prosthetics and Orthotics Clinic.

Her training session had to be slowed down because she was so excited to explore every new thing she could do. Every step was a promise of the future opportunities ahead of her.

It's moments like these that remind us that CURE is about so much more than treatment. It's about giving children the confidence and freedom to embrace the future with joy.

Today is World Clubfoot Day 💚

Clubfoot affects around 1 in every 1,000 babies born worldwide, with an estimated 200,000 children born with the condition each year. In Zimbabwe alone, around 460 children are born with clubfoot annually.

Many live in places where access to medical care is limited, and without treatment, clubfoot can cause pain and severely affect mobility.

Yet when treated early, children can go on to walk, play, attend school, and thrive.

These photos show Tanaka before and after treatment at . When she first arrived, walking was difficult and painful. Today, she can move more freely and look ahead to the future with renewed confidence and excitement.

Stories like Tanaka’s are possible because children have access to skilled medical care and the support of generous donors.

On World Clubfoot Day, we celebrate children like Tanaka, and the healthcare professionals, families, and supporters who help make these life-changing journeys possible.
