We have been working with Wild Welfare concerning the rise of animal cafes in Japan. Please see their post below and sign the petition.

A shocking new report reveals the truth behind the disturbing trend of wild animal cafes. Don’t let your leisure or travel activities contribute to animal suffering!

Our friends at EIA have launched a petition to end commercial whaling. If you could spare two minutes to read their piece below and sign that would be very helpful. Add your voice!

As well as this year’s 40th anniversary of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) moratorium on commercial whaling, EIA and a coalition of conservation and animal welfare organisations have joined forces to launch a global petition to end commercial whaling.
Despite the global ban, the governments of three countries – Iceland, Japan and Norway – have sanctioned the killing of more than 45,000 whales since 1986.
Help us tell them that the world is significantly better off with whales in the world’s oceans – instead of in pet food and in supermarkets.

As we do every year AWJ showed their support at the Animals In War memorial near Hyde Park. Directors Kevin and Novelette laid a wreath alongside many more animal charities. It's always an honour to be involved in such an important event.

All at AWJ were sad to hear of the passing of Jilly Cooper. Not only was she a best selling author, she was also a great friend to animals, in particular dogs. If she could, Jilly was always present at the Animals In War memorial event, which AWJ also supports. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to her family and friends, both human and furry animals.

AWJ has been working with Wild Welfare for several years and are pleased to say that we continued this in 2024 & 2025 by supporting their work to strengthen welfare legislation, help animals in zoos (like the mum and baby rhesus macaque monkeys pictured) and alleviate the growing plight of wild animals in exotic animal cafes. These issues are covered in depth in our new magazine.

Every year our sister organisation JAWS Japan holds an essay-writing contest for school age children. It's their opportunity to write about animal welfare issues. It's extremely popular and the last event had over 1,000 entries.
AWJ sponsors two of the awards and the winners are Mr Ihara, who wrote about the worrying business of blood donor dogs being kept in horrendous conditions, and Ms Takashima, who thoughtfully investigated the impact of global warming on the hibernation patterns of bears. Both are pictured below.
Well done!

Looking back on what we achieved for animals last year - as we plan for 2025 - we were reminded of this heartwarming story from our partners in Japan, the Japan Animal Welfare Society, who rescued this cat and 20 others from dire conditions in Shinagawa, Tokyo. This lovely black-and-white chap was among those lucky cats nursed back to health and successfully rehomed with loving families. We are proud to be helping to make rescue and rehoming stories like these possible and are getting excited about what we can do to help animals in Japan - and worldwide - in 2025!

Our sister association, JAWS - which is based in Japan, were recently involved in a neglect case featuring two Pomeranian dogs called Neko and Pon. Their elderly owner had been hospitalzed with no prospect of being discharged and the dogs had been left in one room without food or water. The house was in a terrible state with rubbish everywhere. JAWS stepped in and took Neko and Pon to the veterinary hospital where their long nails were cut, and their fur was properly groomed removing extensive matted hair and feaces.
We are very happy to say that both Pon and Neko recovered well and have now been adopted by a new owner! Well done to JAWS!
Thanks to donations to AWJ we can help rescue animals in neglect cases and give them a brighter future.

On Friday 8th November 2024 AWJ attended the Animals in War Remembrance gathering at the memorial statue in London.
Every year AWJ along with many other animal charities, lays a wreath to give thanks and remember the animals who have been lost during the wars. It is always a very moving ceremony with many dogs and horses also in attendance.
Lest We Forget.
