The Children's Society We fight for the hope & happiness of young people🌈
Taking inspiration from their courage 🦁

The Children's Society fights for the hope and happiness of young people when it is threatened by abuse, exploitation and neglect. We take inspiration from the courage and hope we see in young people every day, fuelling our belief that a good childhood is something every young person deserves.

We fight for hope by deeply understanding the needs of young people, by counselling and supporting them through their most serious life challenges. We campaign tirelessly for the big social changes that will transform the wellbeing of young people, striving to improve the lives of those who need hope most.

Driven by hope and working alongside young people and supporters, we will not rest until together, step-by-step, we’ve created a society built for all children.

Our new research shows that many young people can spot the signs of a healthy relationship.

However, there are nuances within this. Harmful behaviours are harder to spot when it is happening in their own relationship, or happening online.

The norms, behaviours and language within relationships are changing constantly. Systems need to keep up to stop this being an underrecognised form of harm that too many young people face.

We're calling on the government to support professionals, parents and carers to understand how to spot the signs and intervene early.

Anyone experiencing harm within a relationship deserves support from those around them to understand what’s happening and receive the help they need.

That’s as true for teenagers as it is for adults.

Yet our research finds that, for many teenagers today, abusive and harmful behaviours in relationships are not being spotted or prevented.

That's why The Children's Society is calling on the government for a clear definition of Teenage Relationship Abuse, guaranteed access to effective, specialist support, and support for parents and carers to identify signs of abuse and intervene early.

Every teenager deserves safe and supportive relationships.

Some things in life shouldn’t be a lottery, like growing up. It should be a time that is stable, supportive and safe for everyone.

But unfortunately, for teens across the UK, that’s often not the case. Many are trapped in poverty, struggling with their mental health, and dealing with abuse and exploitation on and offline.

Playing The Children’s Society weekly lottery not only gives you a chance to live your dreams, but helps to fund the support teenagers need to face life’s challenges, whether it's poverty, exploitation or mental health challenges.

Online harm groups, often referred to as ā€˜Com Groups’, are groups of people who use tactics such as grooming, coercion, manipulation and blackmail to exploit young people online.

They often operate through messaging apps, gaming platforms, channels or servers.

The National Crime Agency's Child Exploitation and Online Protection team have launched new resources on the emerging and very concerning threat of online harm groups – the first ever resources on the issue.

They have developed guidance for parents and carers, providing practical information to help families recognise the warning signs, support their child and access support.

This year marks the 15th edition of the Good Childhood Report, our annual report on children's wellbeing.

On 14th October, we're hosting a special event in Parliament, and we need your help to get as many MPs in the room as possible.

An email from you could make all the difference. A single email could be the reason your MP joins the event and takes action on children's wellbeing.

Take action today: https://act.childrenssociety.org.uk/page/200634/action/1?ea.tracking.id=facebook

All children in households who receive Universal Credit will now be eligible for Free School Meals.

However, the additional children who became eligible for Free School Meals will be missing out on vital support come the school holidays, leaving families struggling financially.

That’s why we are campaigning for HAF to be expanded to all children who have become eligible for free school meals.

From one-to-one support, group work and campaigning for what matters, this year we delivered even more for young people.

Thanks to our teams, volunteers, and supporters who make this all possible.

We will keep fighting until we’ve built a brighter future for all young people.
