Where could a gliding bursary take you? 🛩️

For Fred Lomax, it helped turn ambition into achievement.

After using his Air League Gliding Bursary to build valuable cross-country flying experience with PNGC, Fred went on to attend the Junior Nationals Two-Seater Training Week, gaining invaluable experience that accelerated his development as a pilot.

The result? Fred has now successfully passed his Sailplane Pilot Licence (SPL) General Skills Test, earning his SPL licence. His assessor was Jordan Bridge, one of 's scholarship interviewers, making this a special full-circle moment and a wonderful milestone in Fred's aviation journey.

Fred says the bursary played an important role in his development as a pilot, helping him access experiences and training opportunities that supported his progression and success.

Aspiring drone pilots took part in this years' Drone Scholarship programme, gaining their A2 Certificate of Competency and exploring the exciting opportunities available within the rapidly evolving world of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS).

Delivered in partnership with Eagle Eye Innovations Ltd (EEI), the programme combines expert training, practical flying experience and industry insight, helping scholars take meaningful steps towards future careers in drone aviation.

Last week, we welcomed students from Dudley Academies Trust to The Gliding Centre at Husbands Bosworth Airfield for an unforgettable day of aviation discovery ✨

From learning about airfield operations and the principles of flight to experiencing gliding first-hand, the day gave learners the opportunity to build confidence, broaden their horizons and explore the exciting opportunities available across aviation and aerospace.

Experiences like these demonstrate the power of aviation to inspire young people, raise aspirations and help them realise what is possible for their future.

A huge thank you to The Gliding Centre, Rob Barsby from aeroSPARX, The Education Exchange West Midlands, The Boeing Company and Millennium Point Birmingham for helping make this inspiring experience possible.

Join Us at CAA Million Makers: Pulling a Plane for a Purpose ✈️

On Thursday, 8 October, teams from across the aviation sector will take on the challenge of pulling a 20 to 40 tonne aircraft over 60 metres in support of the King's Trust Million Makers campaign.

We're delighted to be attending this exciting event at London Oxford Airport, where team will be running one of our interactive activities alongside a day of friendly competition, fundraising and industry engagement.

On Saturday, 26 September, Air League scholar, Haayed Aslam, took on the RunThrough Battersea Park Half Marathon, lacing up for only his second-ever half marathon to raise funds for 🏃‍♂️

Set in the scenic surroundings of Battersea Park, the 21.1km course required runners to complete 8.75 laps of a fast, flat track. With more than 600 participants and enthusiastic crowds lining the route, the atmosphere helped keep runners going as the laps ticked by and the challenge intensified.

For Haayed, the race was about more than achieving a personal best. Having benefited from our Flying, Drone and Electric Flying Scholarship programmes, he wanted to give back and help ensure future generations can access the same life-changing opportunities.

Setting himself a target of completing the race in under two hours, Haayed crossed the finish line in an impressive 1:59:48, proving that determination, perseverance and hard work can lead to remarkable achievements 🎉

Reflecting on the experience, Haayed highlighted how much he had grown in both fitness and mindset since taking on his first half marathon, and stressed the importance of perseverance, a quality that is just as valuable in aviation as it is on the running track.

Perhaps most inspiring is that just 12 months ago, Haayed had little to no running experience. His message to others is that you don't have to be an experienced runner to make a difference.

Whether it's a run, cycle, walk, skydive or challenge of your own, fundraising for The Air League is a fantastic way to support young people pursuing careers in aviation while pushing yourself to achieve something new.

This Saturday, Haayed Aslam takes on the Battersea Park Half Marathon in support of ! 🏃‍♂️

Having already completed his first half marathon earlier this year at the London Landmarks Half Marathon, Haayed is back on the start line and raising funds to help more young people access life-changing aviation opportunities.

As an Air League scholarship recipient, Haayed has benefited from powered flying, drone piloting and electric flying courses, helping him develop valuable skills on his journey towards a career in aviation. Now, he's giving back to help ensure others can benefit from the same opportunities.

Looking to elevate your aviation expertise? The 2026 IFA/Cranfield John Saull Scholarship is now open, giving aviation professionals and students the opportunity to attend a funded short course at Cranfield University.

The scholarship covers course fees, as well as accommodation and meals for those attending in person, helping make this valuable learning opportunity more accessible. Applicants must be currently working or studying in aviation maintenance, operations, engineering, or safety, while travel costs remain the responsibility of the successful candidate.
