Join us for an evening of books, tea, and conversation ☕📖

UCL Ukrainian Society invites you to a small gathering dedicated to the legacy of Volodymyr Matviienko — Hero of Ukraine, the first Head of the National Bank of Ukraine, and a key figure in shaping the country’s financial system after independence.

Beyond his role in economics and state-building, Matviienko was also deeply engaged in Ukraine’s cultural life — as a writer, poet, and supporter of the arts.

During the evening, we will share a short reflection on his life and contributions, followed by a book giveaway and informal discussions over tea and sweets.

This is a small, cosy event with limited places.

✍️ Can Journalism Be Neutral in an Existential War? Ethical Challenges for Western Media

Join UCL Ukrainian Society for a discussion with Vitaly Shevchenko, journalist at the BBC, on the ethical dilemmas facing Western media when reporting on war and invasion.

As Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine reshaped global politics, journalists were confronted with questions about neutrality and responsibility. How did Western media initially frame the invasion? What distinguishes impartiality from false balance? Can journalism remain neutral when covering an existential war?

Drawing on his experience in international broadcasting, Vitaly Shevchenko will reflect on the challenges of reporting on conflict and the evolving standards of journalistic ethics.

The discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A.

📅 10 March, 18:00
📍 Meeting room 1, UCL Rockefeller Building

Drones beyond the battlefield: How UAV technologies are transforming reconstruction efforts in Ukraine

Unmanned aerial technologies are not just about defence — they are critical tools for mapping damage, planning reconstruction, and building resilient infrastructure.

We’re excited to host Valerii Iakovenko, CEO of DroneUA, for a presentation and Q&A on how Ukrainian engineers are using UAV technologies in civilian reconstruction, and what the UK and global partners can learn from this experience.
