Mark Harmon and Pam Dawber had everything Hollywood could offer – but when it came to their family, they made one decision that changed everything....

For years, Mark Harmon and Pam Dawber kept their marriage, their children and their everyday lives remarkably far away from the spotlight.

There were no constant magazine appearances. No effort to turn their family into a Hollywood brand. And they rarely opened the door to the public when it came to their private lives.

In fact, Pam has explained that keeping their family out of the headlines wasn't simply a preference.

It became something they felt they had to do.

When Pam was preparing to marry Mark, she had already seen what could happen when a celebrity wedding became a media spectacle. She recalled hearing about the intense attention surrounding Julianne Phillips and Bruce Springsteen's wedding, including helicopters hovering over her parents' home and reporters waiting outside.

Pam didn't want that kind of attention surrounding her own wedding.

“We’re not trying to keep something secret, but if you don’t want it totally exploited by the press, you have to,” she explained.

And years later, Mark summed up their approach in an even simpler way.

“It’s not even a choice. It’s who we are.”

The couple also made another major decision when they started having children.

Pam, who had already enjoyed considerable success as an actress on Mork & Mindy, decided she didn't want to keep chasing fame while raising her children.

“I’m not going to chase this fame thing,” she said.

Instead, she wanted to be there for the everyday moments — driving her children to school, celebrating their birthdays, bringing cupcakes and donuts to school events and simply being present.

“I wanted to drive my kids to school, I wanted to be there for their birthdays and bring cupcakes and donuts and do the school festivals and all that, and I did,” Dawber explained.

For Mark, family eventually became just as important.

He later recalled being away filming in New Guinea when his firstborn son took his first steps.

“No job is worth missing life’s important moments,” he said.

As Mark's career continued to grow, eventually leading him to NCIS and one of television's most recognizable roles, the family continued to guard their privacy.

And Pam believes there was another important reason their marriage lasted.

“I don’t think two people can work all the time in show business and stay married,” she said.

Rather than having both parents constantly chasing the next role, the couple found a balance that worked for their family.

Pam stepped away from acting for years to raise their children, while Mark continued building his career. Later, she returned to television for a handful of roles — including a seven-episode appearance on NCIS alongside her husband.

After more than three decades of marriage, Mark and Pam have remained remarkably private while raising two sons and navigating life in one of the world's most demanding industries.

Their story isn't about constantly being seen together.

In many ways, it's about the opposite.

They chose to keep the cameras away from their family — and for them, that wasn't even really a choice ❤️

HAPPY 90TH BIRTHDAY TO A LIVING LEGEND! 🎂🎶

Today we celebrate Steve Reich — born October 3, 1936 in New York City — the American composer who changed music forever.

Before there was minimalism, there was Reich. Tape loops, phasing, repetition that becomes meditation. From 'Music for 18 Musicians' to 'Different Trains' to 'Clapping Music' — he taught us that less can be everything.

90 years of sound, still pulsing, still ahead of its time.

What's the first Steve Reich piece you ever heard? Tell us below.
