CIC - The International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation The CIC is a politically independent advisory body, internationally active on a non-profit basis for game & wildlife conservation and management.

The CIC’s global community advocates sustainable hunting through its knowledge, networks and valued traditions to benefit people and conserve nature. The CIC is present in over 80 countries and is active in various fields such as the conservation and management of migratory birds, big game, tropical game and deals with environmental issues as well as promotes cultural inheritance. Membership consists of individuals, organizations engaged in hunting as well as governments mostly represented by the Ministry responsible for wildlife management. The CIC has gained global recognition as a unique and valuable advisor through its scientific expertise on nature and wildlife conservation issues.

CIC coordinates international response to proposed French trophy import ban

The CIC is coordinating with range states, community organisations and conservation partners in response to the proposed French trophy import ban.

Since August, the CIC has supported wildlife authorities in South Africa, Zambia, Namibia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Cameroon in communicating their perspectives through official and diplomatic channels.

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has also agreed on a coordinated response, while community and conservation organisations across Southern Africa have submitted their own perspectives to the French government.

The CIC continues to work with international partners and stakeholders to ensure that the voices of range states and local communities are represented in discussions concerning wildlife conservation, sustainable use and community livelihoods.

Strengthening bonds for the future of hunting and conservation 🤝

On 31 August, CIC and FACE - European Federation for Hunting and Conservation met in Madrid for the first official meeting between their newly elected Presidents, Luis de la Peña and Dr. Laurens Hoedemaker.

In a constructive and cordial atmosphere, both organisations reaffirmed the organisations’ shared commitment to strengthening cooperation on issues affecting sustainable hunting and wildlife conservation across Europe.

Both organisations agreed to continue their close cooperation and to develop joint activities on certain issues such as sound moderators, conservation of small game, etc.

A new CIC Desk at FACE’s Brussels office will further strengthen cooperation and facilitate coordination between the two organisations on relevent European-level policy. Both organisations will support each other at their respective General Assemblies in Brussels and at the 73rd CIC General Assembly in Hamburg in April 2027.

Together, CIC and FACE are strengthening their partnership to support sustainable hunting, conservation and a strong voice for the hunting community across Europe.

Chamois in a Changing Climate

How are rising temperatures and changing environmental conditions affecting one of Europe’s most iconic mountain species?

Led by Prof. Dr. Klaus Hackländer, President of the CIC Applied Science Division, Chamois in a Changing Climate brings together scientific expertise from across Europe to investigate how climate change is influencing chamois behaviour, habitat selection, distribution and population dynamics.

Temperature can affect chamois both through activity patterns, thermoregulation and indirectly through changes in vegetation, food availability and habitat conditions.

Through its Applied Science Division, CIC supports collaboration between researchers, wildlife managers and hunters, helping translate scientific evidence into regionally adapted and sustainable approaches to chamois management.

Understanding how chamois respond to a changing climate is essential for managing both the species and the mountain ecosystems on which they depend.

Conservation doesn’t stop at borders.

LIFE EUROBUSTARD brings together conservation efforts across Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain and Ukraine to protect two iconic European grassland birds: the Great Bustard and Little Bustard. 🐦

CIC is proud to be a partner of this European effort, working alongside local communities and hunters to support practical, on-the-ground conservation and help secure a future for these remarkable species.

The CIC is pleased to welcome its members, partners and guests to the 73rd General Assembly, taking place in Hamburg from 8–11 April 2027.

As the CIC’s highest decision-making body and most important annual gathering, the General Assembly brings together delegations from around the world for dialogue, collaboration and the renewal of partnerships that support international conservation.

This year’s theme is One Health: Healthy Wildlife, Healthy Ecosystems, Healthy People. 🌿

Today is the final day to apply for the Markhor Award!

Do you have a conservation success story worth celebrating? Make sure to submit your project before the deadline and join a global community of conservation leaders.

The Markhor Award celebrates conservation success stories where local communities, sustainable use and wildlife management come together to create lasting impact.

Since 2008, the award has recognised inspiring projects from across the world from the Selous-Niassa Wildlife Corridor in Tanzania and Mozambique, to community-led conservation in Pakistan, Namibia, Tajikistan, Zimbabwe, Finland, Mexico and Iran.

These projects show that conservation can be most effective when local communities are empowered to take an active role in protecting and managing their natural resources.

A landmark resolution adopted. 700 delegates united around one conviction — that wildlife has a future, and sustainable use is how we secure it.

As we reflect on the highlights of Vienna, we are already looking ahead to Hamburg. 🇩🇪

🥁🌿 700 people. One march. One message.

On 17 April, the streets of Vienna fell silent as delegates from 42 countries walked through the heart of the Austrian capital — led by the historic Original Hoch- und Deutschmeister marching band — to St. Stephen’s Cathedral for the traditional Hunters’ Mass.

Presided over by Bishop Alois Schwarz and Superintendent Mag. Dr. Matthias Geist, the service was a solemn reminder that the conservation of wildlife and wild places is rooted in something deeper than policy. It is a calling. A responsibility. A tradition passed from generation to generation. 🕊️

This was the March for Conservation. And this is why we do what we do.
