Royal Albert Hall

Royal Albert Hall From Proms to punk and everything in between. The world's greatest stage, since 1871.

Conductor Sir Henry Wood founded the Proms in 1895, but it wasn’t until 1941 that the Hall became the festival’s new home.

Every summer, the bronze bust of Sir Henry sits in front of the organ console, looking out at the audience enjoying this celebration of music. At the end of his stay, on the Last Night of the Proms, he will be decorated by the Prommers with a laurel wreath.

A very famous face to some, but to others way up in the Gallery, he could be mistaken for the evening’s organist.

Tonight we're playing tribute to the Prince of Soul, Marvin Gaye, as part of the BBC Proms 🎵

In September 1976, Gaye made his Hall debut with two sold-out shows, as part of his first ever UK tour.

In a review for NME, Cliff White accounted: " By 11:30 pm the evidence had all been presented and the jury was out, judging from snatches of eavesdropped conversation the verdict was 11-1 in favour, ranging from polite appreciation to ecstasy."

"The main revelation of the evening for me was that Marvin is one hell of a singer", he added.

Pick a card, any card… and tour guide Ruth has picked the letter A 🃏

Deemed a ‘mind blower’ on the card, the letter A is dotted around our building over 13,000 times. You can see the As most clearly within the staircases, but if you look a bit harder you might be able to spot them carved into the terracotta on the outside of the building.

Queen Victoria named the building after her beloved Albert, who’s vision it was to construct it. His presence isn’t just in our name, but his initial is etched and moulded into the fabric of the building.

Find out what cards compete with the letter A by getting your own Royal Albert Hall Top Trumps from our Shop at Door 12 or online.
