As Black History Month comes to a close in the UK, the PORA Trustees celebrate ARC’s Director Maceline Mukwamba:
Maceline is the Director of the Adult R**e Clinic (ARC) in Zimbabwe, where she leads with courage and compassion. With degrees covering Nursing Education, Monitoring and Evaluation, Biostatistics and Epidemiology, and a Master’s in Public Policy and Development Management, her expertise spans both the clinical and policy sides of public health.
She has dedicated her career to advancing sexual and reproductive health, raising awareness about gender-based violence, and supporting survivors in a society that too often silences them. Even during ARC’s most financially difficult periods, Maceline chose to stay - working for significantly less than she deserved — simply because she believed so strongly in the organisation’s mission and the people it serves. Her journey - from nurse educator to public health leader - reflects her unwavering resilience and purpose.
What inspires us most is her ability to give so much of herself to her work, not out of obligation, but out of conviction. In her own words: “There is no excuse for r**e and no one has ever asked to be violated.”
Maceline’s courage and compassion are a reminder that change begins with those who refuse to look away.
