Clearvision Project

Clearvision Project This means that sighted parents can read with visually-impaired children- and vice versa! What We Do: ClearVision's a charity.

ClearVision is a UK postal lending library of mainstream children's books which have added braille so that print, pictures and braille appear on the page together. We lend children's books which have both braille (or Moon) and print in them to families who have a visually-impaired member. Usually this is a visually-impaired child who's learning to read or a parent/grandparent who wants to share a

great book with their sighted child/grandchild, but it could be anyone: Auntie, next-door-neighbour, cousin...

We have a great range of books including board books for babies, pictures books including classics like 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' or 'Thomas the Tank Engine', chapter books for children who've got the hang of braille and books for older kids or teens who aren't confident readers but love a great story. How It Works: Our service is free for families, and you can borrow up to 6 books at a time. We send them to you through the post, using the Royal Mail's free Articles For the Blind service in a postal bag. When you want to swap your books, you keep three and send three back, that way you always have something to read! You can swap your books as often as you like. We also lend books to schools, libraries and Visual Impairment services for a heavily-subsidised rate of £50 per year, which gives you up to 20 books at a time. For these organisations we have around 1000 hand-made tactile books- great for teaching tactile skills. Our story: We were set up by a Primary school librarian, who realised that there wasn't a way for non-braille reading parents to help their kids learn to read, or for visually-impaired parents to share a bedtime story. She began with a small box of books, and by 1992 we were an independent charity (No. 1012850). We won the Guardian Charity Award in 2001, and the Quentin Blake Award in 2009. Our Patron is former Children's Laureate Anne Fine. Support our work: we're a small charity, and a little goes a very long way. If you'd like to make a donation you can do so online through BT MyDonate, CAF and The Big Give, with links on our website: http://www.clearvisionproject.org/support.asp. There's also information about book sponsorship and donating your old car (or moped, or lawnmower...!) through Give A Car. Cheques can be sent directly to our postal address- please include a note with your name, address and a declaration of Gift Aid if you pay tax. This makes your donation go further at no cost to you. You can make a payment directly to our bank, either as a one-off payment or by setting up a Direct Debit. Bank name: NatWest Southfields, 250 Wimbledon Park Road, SW19 6ZA
Bank sort code: 60 20 09; a/c name: ClearVision Project; a/c no. 51295814

All support is very much appreciated- and not all the help we need is financial. If you're interested in volunteering for us, please do get in touch.

A reminder that it's Hi-Vis Fortnight. Two weeks where we celebrate all the brilliant stuff done (and the decisions being taken so that more can be done) in public libraries to make them accessible to anyone who can't use standard print books. Contact your local library to find out what's happening to celebrate and what they provide in terms of accessible formats. If the format you need happens to be children's books adapted to include braille as well as the print and pictures, and they don't already have a ClearVision collection, ask them to get one!

A huge thank you to our friends at LOOK - supporting families living with visual impairment who shared our books as part of their work at the wonderful Hay Festival. Books and reading can be for everyone.

Delighted to be speaking at the School Library Association Annual Conference 2026 at the University of Wi******er this Saturday. This year's theme, Changing Narratives is a hugely appropriate focus as we celebrate the National Year of Reading (https://goallin.org.uk/), a campaign aiming to transform attitudes to reading across the country. I'm going to be joining friends from Calibre Audio to talk about why access to reading is vital for everyone, and how to make it happen in school libraries.
www.sla.org.uk/conference School Library Association (UK)

Through the theme of ‘Changing Narratives’ we will explore how school libraries and school librarians have the power to change the often negative narratives surrounding children and young people's reading, learning and wellbeing, offering an all-important antidote to many of the challenges faci...
