Our Turn to Talk is the National Children's Bureau ’s (NCB) Youth-led podcast programme! All episodes are developed and directed by children and young people and focus on topics that are important to them.

Episode 10 has been written and directed by Carys, Lotte and Eden. These three young people work across NCB’s advisory groups and activities, working closely with the Department for Education , and by shaping our research and anti-bullying work.

This episode will explore the language we use when speaking to, and about, disabled young people and those with special educational needs. The group will reflect on why being careful with the words we use is so important, and the effect language can have when it is used in the wrong way.

In this episode Carys, Lotte and Eden will discuss:
• The impact of derogatory language and labelling, and why professionals need to be mindful of this.
• Some of the current debates around what language is appropriate to use.
• The impact that inappropriate language can have on young people, and their mental health.
• How the language you choose to use can help young people to build their identity.
