“We as a profession have to ask ourselves what is going on, and what we should be doing.”

Around 3% of solicitors are Black, yet Black solicitors represented 15% of new people approaching The Solicitors’ Charity for support in 2025.

In Episode 8 of The Legal Pause, Dr I. Stephanie Boyce CBE and Nick Gallagher discuss what these figures could be telling us about the pressures affecting different groups within the profession.

The one thing that helps me with my wellbeing is... 🎨

"A visit to a gallery to gaze at fine art. I have annual membership at the Tate and National Gallery. It slows me down mentally and physically. It feeds my imagination. It enriches or enrages, both of which I enjoy. If my mood takes me I can go quickly or focus solely on just one work. Above all, it requires nothing of me but a little time and a small cost."

💬 "You're always in a position where you have to strive to do better."

When we asked legal professionals what most affects wellbeing in the profession today, Avantia by Carta reflected on the pressures of career progression, performance and the expectation to continually achieve more.

One thing that helps me… 🌊

"I’ve recently rediscovered sea bathing. It’s sociable, gets me immersed in nature, and there’s something incredibly restorative about being in the sea. Whether it’s the fresh air, the cold water or simply taking a moment to slow down, I always come away feeling calmer and re-energised."

The one thing that helps me with my wellbeing is... 🚴

"Whether it's a solo ride in local quiet lanes, an adventurous multi-day bikepacking route in the Cairngorms with a mate, or a club group ride where we chat as we move, I can enjoy being in the outside world with the sky above my head, feeling immersed in nature and the openness of our wonderful countryside, the challenge of a big ascent, or the solitude of the mountains. Whichever it is, it provides a recharge, social connection, exercise or a personal challenge. I always feel better, more alive, more energised and positive."

💬 "Wellbeing is about the whole person – mental health, physical health and how you're doing holistically."

When we asked legal professionals what wellbeing means to them, what most affects wellbeing in the profession today, and how easy it is to open up when struggling, Kingsley Napley highlighted the pressures many professionals face, from long hours and targets to the wider challenges affecting society as a whole.

A reminder that wellbeing doesn't start and end at work – it's shaped by everything happening around us.

Yet almost a quarter of respondents also identified a lack of work-life balance as one of the biggest challenges they face.

Finding time to switch off isn't always straightforward, but it's clear that making space for life outside work matters.
