Theophrastus Ltd Social Botany

The ‘father of botany’, Theophrastus, was born in Lesvos (c. 371 – 287 BC); his classification of plants was the first of its kind and remains the single most important contribution to botanical science to date. Social Botany combines the study of the ecology of olive groves with a social commitment to introduce the practice of botany to young people from socially d

eprived backgrounds from inner city London. Theophrastus Ltd Social Botany aims to cultivate attitudes of social responsibility, healthy habits and ethical work values in young people by involving them directly in the different phases of the olive oil production cycle. These educational & work experience field trips are financed by means of the sale of mainly organic certified extra-virgin olive oil and private botany trips. Evidently any olive oil sold to finance a Social Botany programme will, by the very nature of the programme, be required to be of superlative quality, “found where the wise live”. Altering the opening quote of the preface of The Characters of Theophrastus, written by J. Edmonds in 1927: a good olive oil that needs no bush, but it has been bottled anew, and new bottles may need a word of recommendation. For more information: www.theophrastus.org
