What does it take to transcend? 🌀✨ For the Orchestra of 2026, it meant taking on demanding and powerful music, and discovering just how far orchestral music could take them. 🎶

A 5-star opening concert in Birmingham and a spellbinding night in Snape Maltings, before a sold-out BBC Proms finale at the Royal Albert Hall. Transcend filled concert halls with surreal soundscapes, and music that kept audiences on the edge of their seats. ⚡️

But it was about more than what happened on stage. Young people from across the country discovered what orchestral music could give them with teenagers making up half the audience in Birmingham, Side by Side rehearsals in Keele, Birmingham and Suffolk, and a visit on the summer residency from OnSide youth centres. 🙌

Saturday night saw The National Youth Orchestra taking its sold-out Royal Albert Hall audience on a thrilling descent into the underworld and back. Under the baton of Thomas Adès, they brought to life Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz No. 1 and Adès’s Purgatorio from his ballet Dante. The evening culminated in Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique ending with its wild, nightmarish Witches’ Sabbath.
