Brave New Europe

Brave New Europe BRAVE NEW EUROPE the first trans-European blog challenging the predominant neo-liberal discourse: articles and podcasts by experts with a radical attitude.

Why BRAVE NEW EUROPE

“When money talks, everybody else is condemned to listen”, wrote the American historian Christopher Lasch twenty years ago. He was referring to the increasing concentration of wealth, including control of the media, in the hands of a tiny minority. This concentration puts at risk one of the most fundamental elements of a democratic society: the plurality and free flow of info

rmation and opinions. European public discourse has been hijacked by a neo-liberal ideology, promulgated by a powerful wealthy few, which has successfully dominated the continent for decades. This ideology in the meantime permeates all aspects of life, including media, politics and universities. Today there is still no sign of a coherent pan-European alternative programme that benefits the majority of Europe’s populace, resulting in largely isolated and ephemeral protests against the neo-liberal agenda. To facilitate the formation of a coherent alternative discourse to disseminate innovative political and economic ideas, BRAVE NEW EUROPE will be offering in-depth information and analyses, enabling European citizens to better comprehend their political and economic realities. It will provide ideas for achieving greater equality and social inclusion, challenging the neo-liberal monologue that increasingly dominates corporate and state media. Involving mainly authors from the continent or the diaspora, BRAVE NEW EUROPE will for the first time connect Europeans with a common forum, exploring, yet not over-simplifying, the complex reality in which we live and focussing on pivotal current issues. The exchange of ideas will not be limited to the contributors, but will include comments by readers, aiming to build a community of participants and a forum in which public issues can be debated and solutions sought.

Ian Proud - The cancellation of mainstream debate in the west on Ukraine

https://braveneweurope.com/ian-proud-the-cancellation-of-mainstream-debate-in-the-west-on-ukraine

There has been an enormous cancellation of debate on Ukraine in the mainstream western media. Google does its part too, making it difficult in the west to search for and find genuinely independent reporting on key events. When you search for issues, such as Ukrainian casualty rates, ultra-nationalism in Ukraine, presidential elections or the state of Ukraine’s economy, the computer will normally say no

Economist Michael Hudson argues that this is as good as it is going to get for the global economy, as the US moves into chaos mode.

'I think the United States, Europe, and the Near Eastern economic and political situation is, obviously, it’s unstable. And almost any specific forecast we make is likely to be wrong because there are so many variables at work and competing interests at play. But actually, this is what mathematicians call an optimum position. That may sound optimistic, and I’m never one to be optimistic, but an optimum position is technically one that, wherever you move, it’s going to be worse.

'This is mathematically as good as it is. And that’s pretty much the situation you have today. You could say we’re now in the best of all possible worlds, given the policies that have led to the conflicts that we’re seeing: the conflict of national interest, the conflict of domestic interest, the conflict between the United States and Europe, and the United States against all the rest of the world. And I think that this year is going to be more than just change. I think that chaos is now official US policy. And that’s what you do when you’re trying to stop the world from moving in a direction that’s not in your interest.'

Caitlin Johnstone
takes aim at Bono, who has received 'the Presidential Medal of Freedom' from Joe Biden.

'If neoliberalism was a person, that person would be Bono — one of the wealthiest musicians alive. It just says so much about how gross things are in this warped and twisted civilization that such a creature is viewed as an artist and beloved by millions throughout the western world, and is being presented with an award by a president who is currently facilitating a genocide.

'Speaking of the Gaza genocide, to this date the only thing Bono has had to say publicly about the current spate of violence in the middle east was to mourn the victims of the October 7 Hamas attack who were killed whilst raving outside a concentration camp, changing the lyrics of the song “Pride (In the Name of Love).”

'“Early morning, October 7, as the sun is rising in the desert sky, Stars of David, they took your life, but they could not take your pride,” the singer crooned emotionally.

'Whenever I’m sad about a musician I like having died before their time, I comfort myself with the thought at least they didn’t live long enough to become another Bono.'

Chris Hedges
on the new normal of genocide.

'Joe Biden’s parting gift of $8 billion in weapons sales to the apartheid state of Israel acknowledges the gruesome reality of the genocide in Gaza.

'This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end.

'This is a permanent, endless war designed not to destroy Hamas, or free Israeli hostages, but to eradicate, once and for all, Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.

'It is the final push to create a Greater Israel, which will include not only Gaza and the West Bank, but chunks of Lebanon and Syria.

'It is the culmination of the Zionist dream. And it will be paid for with rivers of blood — Palestinian, Lebanese and Syrian.'

Branko Milanović
argues that Trump's inauguration will be a historic turning point.

'January 20, 2025 marks a symbolic end to global neoliberalism. Both of its components are gone. Globalism had now been converted into nationalism, neoliberalism has been made to apply to the economic sphere only. Its social parts—racial and gender equality, free movement of labor, multiculturalism—are dead. Only low tax rates, deregulation and worship of profit remain.'

Former Italian diplomat Alberto Bradanini on the EU hanging on to the coattails of American empire.

'We have said several times about the gloomy European Union, a colonized entity accustomed to the violation of relevant principles of public and private ethics.

'It helps to alleviate depression the consciousness that the EU has long ceased to be a protagonist on the international scene.

'A noteworthy aspect is the care that its leaders reserve in polishing the buttons of the butler’s livery, which they wear, however, with great dignity!

'It is a source of relative consolation that the Global South – the resistant and emerging nations – is looking for other horizons, towards a plural and multipolar world, no longer subservient to globalist finance led by American corporations and the warmongering deep/permanent state of the declining American Empire.

'The BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), the Eurasian Economic Union, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and other continental groupings constitute an encouraging manifestation of the recovery of sovereignty by the Global South that could one day project a beneficial influence even on the West.'
