Augustine โ€˜Pepeโ€™ Francis MBE is a living pioneer of the UK steelpan movement and Notting Hill Carnival. Over decades, he has played a leading role in shaping and safeguarding Carnival, including serving previously as Chair of London Notting Hill Carnival Enterprises Trust (LNHCET).

As Director of Ebony Steelband, Pepe has dedicated his life to the development of steelpan and Carnival culture. Ebony has secured 24 UK Panorama championships, including an unprecedented run of nine consecutive titles between 1991 and 1999 that remains unbeaten.

We mourn the passing of Sterling Betancourt MBE, a true pioneer of steelpan and a giant of Caribbean culture.

As one of the original members of TASPO, Sterling helped introduce steelpan to Britain in 1951 and played a pivotal role in laying the foundations for what would become Notting Hill Carnival. His influence can still be felt in every steelband, every pan player and every note played across Carnival today.

That his passing comes during the 75th anniversary year of TASPO makes this loss even more poignant.

Sterling didnโ€™t just witness history, he helped create it.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends and the entire community.

Rest in power, Sterling Betancourt MBE. ๐Ÿ–ค

Chris Somes-Charlton is a local resident who has spent years bridging the gap between the carnival committees, RBKC and the neighbourhood making sure that the people who live on the footprint arenโ€™t just bystanders, but part of the conversation.

For Chris, carnival does something to the streets that canโ€™t be replicated anywhere else. It changes the feeling of the neighbourhood and reminds everyone what community actually means.

His hope is simple: that it stays exactly that.. local, rooted and real.

Safety at carnival isnโ€™t just logistics, itโ€™s care ๐Ÿ–ค

David Prince has been providing community stewards to Notting Hill Carnival for years, ensuring that everyone who steps onto the footprint is treated with dignity and respect. From recruiting and training staff to overseeing security at the Tabernacle and across the carnival route, his work is rooted in something deeper than crowd management.

Itโ€™s about making people feel welcome in a space that belongs to them.

Road Make to Walk: Remembering 1976 and the Struggle to Keep Carnival on the Streets of Notting Hill is a landmark event marking 50 years since the community fought and won the right to keep carnival exactly where it belongs.

Weโ€™ll be celebrating the republication of Road Make to Walk on Carnival Day, written by Darcus Howe and published by the Race Today Collective, the text that chronicled the fierce fightback against attempts to push carnival off the streets of Notting Hill.

NHC CEO Matthew Phillip will be in conversation with Leila Hassan Howe, former Race Today Collective member and part of the 1970s Race Today Renegades mas band, moderated by historian and cultural theorist .

Without 1976, there may not have been 60 years. Come and hear the story.
