We’re so excited to announce Rob Brougham as a speaker at ! 🌟

Rob’s career spans astrophysics, telecommunications, and digital health- experience that led him to co-found Braided.Space, a company tackling one of the toughest challenges of future exploration: how astronauts in deep space can stay in meaningful contact with friends, family, and colleagues despite huge communication delays.

The breakthrough came with Space Braiding, a system that maintains psychological synchrony and co-presence even when every message is affected by latency. This innovation not only helps future astronauts thrive but also opened a new perspective on a challenge we all face on Earth- how to make our everyday communication more efficient, inclusive, and human.

In his talk, ‘Great Minds do NOT Think Alike’, Rob will explore how lessons from deep space communication can transform workplace collaboration. He will show how embracing different ways of thinking, including neurodiverse perspectives, can make meetings more effective and creative. Attendees will get to learn about space-inspired methods that are already influencing how organisations collaborate on Earth, and leave with practical tools and techniques they can apply immediately in their own studies, work, and careers.

On 19th July 2025, eight student teams competed in the Advanced Stream of the Olympus Rover Trials (ORT) 24/25, hosted at Airbus!

Their mission was to navigate a simulated Martian landscape and scan QR-coded “rock samples” to retrieve encoded chemical composition data- mirroring the real-world challenges of ESA’s Rosalind Franklin rover mission. After completing the course, rovers underwent vibration and functionality testing, putting engineering designs to the test.

The competition was fierce, with innovative solutions and strong technical performances across the board.

🏆 Overall Winner: UKAEA
📚 Best CDR: Cranfield
💡 Best Innovation: Bath Roving
⚙️ Best Automation: Cranfield
🔭 Best Outreach: QUB

A huge thank you to all the teams for their incredible work, to Airbus for hosting, and to the UNICOM team for their invaluable support in making the day possible!

A special thank you to our incredible Competitions Team volunteers: Oliver Lee, Aamir Sarpal, Geethanjali Gopinath, Alex Dunne, Jason Richards, and Beth Nicholson, and everyone else involved in making this wonderful competition possible. Our volunteers are the heart of our organisation, and we thank you for your passion and dedication!

UKSEDS competitions like the Olympus Rover Trials are vital for preparing the next generation of space engineers. They provide hands-on experience in robotics, systems engineering, and mission-style challenges, bridging the gap between academia and industry. Join us today for more such opportunities!
