UKSEDS is the UK’s national student and early professional space charity, providing a nationwide platform for skills development, networking, and career advancement in the space sector. UK Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (UKSEDS) is the UK's national student space society. We support students, industry, and enthusiasts across the country by running projects, workshops, the National Student Space Conference, and outreach to inspire and educate. We’re delighted to announce Dr Zoe Swann Baillie as a speaker at ! 🌟

Dr Zoe Swann Baillie is a spaceflight neuroscientist and Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Leverhulme Centre for Humanity and Space, University of Leicester. Trained in neuroscience, linguistics, biomedical engineering, and clinical research, her work explores how humans adapt to extreme environments and how future systems can better support wellbeing, autonomy, and participation.

Drawing on both her professional and lived experience of disability, Zoe’s research spans disability studies, ethics, human factors, informed consent, and personalised health monitoring. She is particularly interested in what disability can teach us about trust, resilience, and designing environments in which diverse humans can flourish. At DiSC, Zoe will present “Barriers and Belonging: What Meaningful Accessibility Can Teach Us About Human Flourishing in Space and on Earth” and “Across Borders: Finding Your Place in UK Space”.

We often think of accessibility as removing barriers for a minority. Zoe argues it is our greatest source of expertise. Drawing on disability studies, neuroscience, healthcare, and human-centred design, Zoe explores accessibility as a question of participation, trust, belonging, and human flourishing.

What makes a system genuinely accessible? Why do some forms of support empower while others feel like surveillance? And what can disability teach us about adaptation, resilience, and care?

We’re delighted to announce Meganne Christian as a keynote speaker at ! 🌟

Dr Meganne Christian is a European Space Agency - ESA reserve astronaut and Beyond Earth Mission Manager at the Satellite Applications Catapult, having previously served as Senior Exploration Manager at the UK Space Agency. She holds a PhD in Industrial Chemistry from the University of New South Wales. Between 2014 and 2023, she conducted materials science research at Italy’s National Research Council, including parabolic flight campaigns testing graphene for satellites. Her experience includes overwintering in Antarctica as Concordia Station’s atmospheric physicist. In 2022, she was selected from 22,500 applicants as part of ESA’s first new astronaut class in 13 years.

At DiSC, Meganne will recount the experiences that led her to be selected as a member of the European Space Agency astronaut reserve, from materials science studies in microgravity to a year working at Concordia Station in Antarctica, one of the most remote places on Earth, also known as “White Mars”. She will describe her experiences as a woman in STEM, the tough astronaut selection process and her hopes for the future, as well as the work she is doing on in-space manufacturing at the Satellite Applications Catapult.

As we approach the end of the 25-26 Executive Committee term, we recognise the individuals whose dedication, leadership, and commitment have helped shape UKSEDS and the wider UK space community.

A Physics & Astronomy graduate from the University of Glasgow, Anna Kalapurakkal has been part of UKSEDS for over four years, including more than two on the Executive Committee. Her journey began as a founding member and President of the University of Glasgow UKSEDS branch. Alongside her studies, she expanded her involvement in the space sector through SGAC project groups.

Anna joined UKSEDS in 2022 as an Events Coordinator before becoming External Communications & Operations Manager and later joining the Executive Committee as our Chair. During her tenure, she helped guide the organisation through a period of significant growth by strengthening its operations and governance, introducing key processes and roles, expanding partnerships and funding opportunities, increasing its visibility, and leading the National Student Space Conference for two consecutive years.

Beyond UKSEDS, Anna is a Certified Internal Auditor at Barclays and a long-standing Trustee for Make a Smile. She has also represented UKSEDS across industry initiatives such as the Space Skills Advisory Panel and the Space & Satellites Professionals International Committee.

Thank you, Anna, for your leadership, dedication, and contributions over the past four years. Your impact on UKSEDS, the students and early-career professionals it supports, and the wider space community will be felt for years to come. 🚀
