We support people with mental, psychological, and physical needs in Government care in Oltenia, Romania, and advocate for their right to live independently in the community and avoid long-term institutional care. Below is some more detailed information about each project:

Oltenia, Romania -
Our longest running project, working with Romanian volunteers in state homes for children with disabilities

, as well as adult institutions. Many of the people we work with on this project have complex disabilities and forms of institutionalised autism, so a lot of the work is based around one to one interaction and giving vital attention and stimulation - often lacking due to demands on carers' time. Meet the Team: Rebecca 👋

We’re delighted to introduce Rebecca, a valued member of The Life Foundation Committee.

Rebecca is a Paediatric Physiotherapist at a hospital in London, where she supports children with a wide range of physical disabilities. She is particularly passionate about the early detection and intervention of Cerebral Palsy, helping children reach their full potential through specialist care and support.

Rebecca’s journey with The Life Foundation began in 2014, when she joined a two-week volunteer trip while studying for her degree. Nearly a decade later, in 2023, she returned to visit the foundation and was inspired by the positive developments and progress that had taken place over the years.

During her visit, Rebecca spent time working alongside the foundation’s physiotherapist, Nicu, witnessing firsthand the dedication and impact of his work with the children. Seeing the difference that therapy and support can make reinforced her commitment to the charity’s mission.

Every child deserves access to the right support at the right time.

Thanks to the generosity of donations, young people are able to attend sessions with Adriana, our Clinical Psychologist, at our centre. These contributions directly help keep our doors open and allow Adriana to continue her important work supporting children and families.

This was one young person’s very first session — an opportunity they may not have had without the centre being up and running through your support. We’re so pleased to share that they really enjoyed the experience and took an important first step forward. 💛

Hi, I’m Sophie 👋

I’m a Clinical Psychologist and Trustee for the LIFE Foundation. My journey with LIFE actually began by accident—back in 2009, I had planned a volunteering trip with another organisation that fell through at the last minute. A colleague suggested LIFE might offer something similar, and that chance recommendation changed everything.

After my first visit, I was invited back in 2012 for a specialist trip, focusing on supporting behaviours of concern and using Intensive Interaction. That experience inspired me to become more involved, leading me to join the committee and later become a Trustee in 2017.

Using my skills as a psychologist to support both our beneficiaries and the staff who work so closely with them is incredibly important to me. I’m especially proud of the positive changes I’ve seen since that very first visit—it’s been an amazing journey to be part of.

Your support truly changes lives 💛

Thanks to your generous donations, physiotherapy is accessible to children and families in our community who might otherwise go without this vital support. For some of these children, leaving their home—or even their bed—is incredibly difficult, and physio days become a rare and important opportunity to move, stretch, and build strength.

These sessions are more than just therapy—they are moments of freedom, progress, and hope. They help improve mobility, ease discomfort, and give children the chance to experience the world beyond their immediate surroundings.

Your support helps keep our centre open and thriving 💛

Today, the children had an amazing time learning valuable life and maths skills through our role play shop. They explored different real-life situations—shopping for cleaning items, buying a gift for a friend, choosing ingredients for cooking, and picking toys and games.

The aim was to help them think about what they need in each situation, stay within a budget, and practise managing prices and giving the correct change. Through play, they built confidence, problem-solving skills, and teamwork!
