Nearly 5,000 babies are born at Kingston Hospital every year, and behind each of those births is a clinical team prepared for every possibility. π
Thanks to Kingston Hospital Charity, that team now has access to Cell Salvage, a remarkable system that collects and cleans a woman's own blood during delivery so it can be safely returned to her if significant bleeding occurs.
Since its introduction, Cell Salvage has been used in 96 higher-risk obstetric cases. In around 70% of those cases, women received their own blood back during surgery, reducing the need for donor blood transfusions and supporting safer, more personalised care.
It is particularly significant for women who choose not to receive donor blood, including members of Kingston's Jehovah's Witness community, for whom this technology opens up delivery options that simply weren't available before.
This is what charitable funding makes possible.
