Reflection on exhibition visit🍎
On Tuesday this week, we host a trip to the Science Museum to visit the exhibition. While the gallery isn’t particularly big, the space was well planned with inspiring content.🌟
Heading in from the entrance, we first encountered an overall factual summary of major consumer products, like potato, margarine, and corn. We learned about the history of Green Revolution: how it both boosted population growth by producing enough food to feed the global population and harmed the environment with overused chemicals fertilizers, pesticides, and deforestation. We were all shocked by the striking numbers displayed on the digital board, which were constantly growing as the clock ticked (Image 13). Exhaustion of land resources by monoculture farming, overuse of chemicals, and overcrowded animal factories are slowly killing the food system.💥
Following a short tunnel, we were exposed to potential solutions to the problem of unsustainable food production, the supposed “future of food” (Images 2&3). Here, science brought awareness and change, offering alternative ways to produce enough for everyone in a more sustainable way. Growing perennial crops and eco-friendly animal/plant farms can replace exhaustive farming practices, with lab grown meat and genetically modified crop providing ways to improve animal welfare and reduce climate impact.🌿
Stepping into the last section, we were asked to consider our own food consumption habits: how can we make conscious choices to eat for a more sustainable future? The answer is simple, just pay more attention to the source of your food. Purchasing locally-grown food reduces energy cost during transportation. Supporting food suppliers that ensure animal welfare (e.g. free range chickens) can dissuade unethical animal farming practices. Choosing seasonal food encourages farmers grow food in a natural way. I am convinced that with enough knowledge and right actions, we can reshape the future of food as a whole. 🥗
Feel free to comment below to share how you envision our future of food to be :)
