“Once there’s no rain, we don’t have any other means to water our plants.”

Carolyne Oguto, a farmer from Seme County in Kenya, has experienced first‑hand the impact of climate change.

Radio weather updates help her community adapt, and improved programming has opened the door to new ideas and technologies.

“Once we know how the weather is going to be, we know how to plan ourselves and the kind of seeds we are going to plant.”

“Nowadays, we are not experiencing any weather‑related accidents on the lake.”

Peter Luya, a radio presenter at Tembea FM in Kenya, was struck by how quickly the radio weather and climate broadcasts had begun saving lives.

The fishing community on Lake Victoria told him that the updates had transformed their safety on the water.

“Since we started receiving the updates this year, we haven’t had a single weather‑related accident,” they said.

What does workplace sexual harassment do to a person? It shows up in their confidence, their sense of safety, and their will to stay in the industry.

A new 21-country study by BBC Media Action, WAN-IFRA Women in News, and City, St George’s, University of London, finds that nearly half of media professionals who took the survey don't feel emotionally safe at work, a figure that mirrors harassment rates almost exactly.

The 2025 report on sexual harassment in media is out now - with findings, insights, and concrete recommendations for building safer, more inclusive newsrooms.

A new study by BBC Media Action, WAN-IFRA Women in News, and City, St George’s, University of London, finds that the vast majority of sexual harassment cases in newsrooms still go unreported.

Structural barriers affect accountability across media workplaces – with women and gender non-conforming professionals disproportionately affected. The consequences are far-reaching and limit who can participate, lead, and shape editorial decisions.

The findings of this report will help inform future policies and protections across the media sector and help build a safer environment for all.

“The fight is not only against corruption, it is also against disinformation.”

Shalveen Chand, editor at the Samoa Observer, recently joined a training programme in Fiji, where Flora Carmichael from BBC Verify teamed up with BBC Media Action to support Pacific Island journalists.

Over two weeks, journalists were introduced to verification tools used by BBC News’ specialist BBC Verify team to help them better identify disinformation and challenge false claims.

“It's provided us with a lot to think about, especially in the online space where everyone claims to be a journalist.” said Matthew Vari, digital director at Post-Courier Daily.

From deepfakes to digital abuse, technology is transforming how women are targeted - and how truth is challenged.

At Women Holding the Line: Storytelling & Safety in an Age of AI - a side event convened in partnership with BBC Media Action and Peace Pays at UN’s Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70), we saw around 60 leaders from across the globe, journalists, activists, technologists, policymakers, and funders, gathered to examine how emerging technologies are reshaping both risk and resilience for women in public life.

Radio is saving lives on Lake Victoria.

Early weather information shared through radio helps fishing communities prepare for changing conditions on the lake — often before the day even begins.

More engaging and understandable radio programming has reduced deaths from drowning because people know when it's safe to go out, and when to stay home.

It is also helping people plan for the fishing season — preparing harvests, repairing boats, accessing markets, and avoiding losses.

For too long, female journalists in Somalia have faced systemic barriers to leadership.

But with our support, they have learned to overcome the barriers.

As we look back at our progress over the last year, one thing is clear: the future of public interest content in Somalia is increasingly female, digital and resilient.

In Somalia we aren't just teaching journalism, we are investing in its information ecosystem.

We’re delighted to share that our children’s audio show in Gaza, Storytime with Zaza and Zuzu, has bagged the WAN-IFRA Middle Eastern Digital Media Award for the Best Use of Audio!

The jury described the series as “an excellent example of how journalism can connect meaningfully with listeners”, praising its carefully crafted soundscapes, strong scripts and believable children’s voices.

Aimed to provide educational entertainment and psychosocial support, the show uses audio storytelling to create moments of safety, connection and emotional relief in wartime. In its first season, it reached more than 25,000 children in over 200 listening sessions in Gaza; today, we’ve produced over 80 episodes that are now airing for Palestinian children across West Bank and Gaza.

“Taking action against abuses is extremely difficult because those in positions of authority are often the same individuals responsible for handling complaints,” shares a woman journalist from Tanzania. “Many women find it hard to report such cases, leading some to resign, step down from leadership roles, or move from one media organisation to another in search of a safer working environment.”

Sexual harassment in media is a pervasive issue – yet it frequently goes unreported.

In 2025, we partnered with WAN-IFRA WIN and City, St George's University of London to conduct a multi-country study examining how the situation in media workplaces has evolved over the last several years, and what more needs to be done.

Join us for the official report launch: findings, expert insights, and an honest conversation on solutions that can create safer, more inclusive media workplaces.
