There’s still time to join Coram Creative Therapy’s roundtable sessions for mental health practitioners and therapists working with children who have a social worker.

These sessions are an opportunity to come together with other practitioners, share insights from real-world practice, and reflect on the challenges of supporting children in complex situations.

The experiences shared will help inform a short report capturing practitioner perspectives and identifying what support and guidance may be needed.

Mental health practitioners working with children in care, on the edge of care or post-care (SGO & Adoption) often face complex decisions on how to best meet children’s emotional needs.

Community Care has reported on government proposals that would make age assessments by the National Age Assessment Board binding on local authorities.

The proposals have raised concerns from children’s and refugee charities, including the Refugee and Migrant Children’s Consortium, which Coram Children’s Legal Centre co-chairs.

Anita Hurrell, Head of Policy at Coram Children’s Legal Centre, said:

“Age assessments should be social work led, safeguarding focused and multidisciplinary. Resources should be used to support improved local authority age assessment practice.”

Coram Children’s Legal Centre has published a new report on school exclusions, highlighting how tens of thousands of children are being removed from mainstream education due to the growing use of informal practices with no legal safeguards or oversight.

Coram Children’s Legal Centre has found evidence of opaque practices such as off-rolling, internal isolation, managed moves and off-site direction, with significant and often unchecked consequences for children.

The report also finds serious shortcomings in review mechanisms including a lack of independence, long delays and powerless independent review panels (IRP).

Ahead of the Government’s upcoming inclusion reforms, the report calls for clearer national guidance on exclusionary practices operating outside, or on the margins of, the statutory framework. It sets out a series of recommendations to ensure strengthened IRPs and greater transparency and accountability across the exclusions system.

The CMA review into childcare provision is an opportunity to better understand how the childcare system is working for families.

The 30 hour childcare entitlement has brought costs down for many working families, but some are finding their hours are restricted and they still need to pay for extras, like food, nappies and activities, which are not covered by government funding.

Right now there is still too much confusion and variation for parents, with charges ranging from a few pounds to hundreds of pounds per month.

We need to understand what is happening, why, and how it is affecting families who want to give their child the best start in life and who rely on childcare for work.

The CMA review is an opportunity to do that, and to start building a fairer system – one that properly funds nurseries and childminders to deliver affordable childcare to families.

Visit The Story of the Westerham Foundlings, now open to the public at Quebec House.
A new exhibition at National Trust property Quebec House is shining a light on the lives of the 18th-century children left in the care of the Westerham branch of the Foundling Hospital.

Developed in partnership with Coram, The Story of the Westerham Foundlings explores the lives of some of the 469 children who lived at Westerham’s Wellstreet branch of the Foundling Hospital between 1760 and 1769.

The exhibition presents archival material, interpretive displays and creative responses from local pupils, helping visitors connect with the personal stories behind the historical records.

Visitors can also see contemporary tokens crafted by local schoolchildren in tribute to the foundlings of the 1760s, alongside historic records from Coram’s Foundling Hospital Archive.

The exhibition is now open to the public in the Coach House at Quebec House and will run throughout the year.

What needs to change to make school exclusions fairer for children and families?

Tes magazine has covered Coram Children’s Legal Centre’s new report, Fairness in school exclusions: A roadmap for change, published today.

The report highlights how tens of thousands of children are being removed from mainstream education through “informal practices” such as off-rolling, managed moves and off-site direction.

It also calls for Independent Review Panels to be given powers to reinstate excluded pupils, addressing what Coram Children’s Legal Centre’s describes as an “acute systemic power imbalance” in the school exclusions system.

As Marianne Lagrue, Policy Manager at Coram Children’s Legal Centre’s, told Tes: “With formal exclusions at near-record highs, and informal exclusion practices growing, it seems that this power imbalance has gone too far the other way.”

This , we’re sharing what family building can mean.

Building a family for children who cannot be cared for by their own birth family can take various forms. Both fostering and adoption are great ways to make a positive difference in the lives of children and young people.
