Hornsey Vale Community Centre

Hornsey Vale Community Centre A community centre in North London offering a wide range of weekly classes and low cost events. Between 1991 and 2000, the Centre was run by volunteers.

Hornsey Vale Community Association has been running the Community Centre since 1991. When Stationers School was closed in 1983, Haringey Council proposed it should be turned into a local community centre, following pressure from local residents. Many local people became involved in a Steering Group to take it forward. Due to financial pressures, the Council sold off part of the building - the land

was eventually used to build Abyssinia Court Close Care development run by Hornsey Housing Trust. Local people campaigned long and hard for the remaining part of the old school to be kept and turned into a community centre. In fact, the Council used the building for a short time for Hornsey Ridge After School Club. The Steering Group had by then formed Hornsey Vale Community Association, and had very limited use of the building. As a result of further financial pressure, the Council decided it could not run the centre and presented the Community Association with an option to take it over and run it. A business plan was drawn up and accepted by the Council in early 1991, and we were given the keys to the building in April of that year. Originally the Centre was known as Stationers Community Centre, as Stationers School (the original building) had been in the area for a long time, and the adjacent park had been called Stationers Park. The name was changed to Hornsey Vale Community Association in 2000. All the bookings, administration and other work was carried out by members of the Management Committee. As the work increased it was no longer viable to run the Centre on this voluntary basis. The condition of the building was also deteriorating. We applied to the National Lottery Charities Board (now known as the NL Communities Fund) for a grant to refurbish the building and employ a Co-ordinator. Our second application was successful. The building was closed for refurbishment and re-opened in May 2000 with a May Gala. As a result of the building work, the Centre was made more accessible, with ramps, wider doors and larger toilets. The Centre employs two part time members of staff and is actively fundraising to create more capacity. The Community Association is a registered charity (No. 1011127) and also a Company Limited by Guarantee.

IMPORTANT - CHANGE TO TOILET ACCESS FOR MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC, EVENINGS AND WEEKENDS

I'm very disappointed to have to tell you the centre has had repeated bouts of 'minor' vandalism in the centre, not restricted to but especially concentrated around the toilets.
Whole rolls of toilet paper and entire reams of hand towels have been forced down the toilets repeatedly.
We have previously had to have plumbers come out to remove the blockages that office staff couldn't, this has resulted in a lot of time and money spent. Not just on the plumbing but also wasted toilets rolls and hand towels, and extra hours for the centre cleaner.
Unfortunately this has now escalated to a serious blockage in the drains that has impacted all of the usual publicly available toilets, and is costing us in excess of £450 for a drain specialist to resolve today.

To try to avoid a repeat of this, I am very saddened to say we will not be able to offer toilet access to the public when the office is closed until further notice. This means the front door to the centre will be locked at either 4pm or 5pm each evening, and at weekends. Only centre hirers will be able to access the toilets at these times for now.

I understand this will be an unpopular decision with those of you who use the toilets and are not engaging in anti-social behaviour, and it is not a decision HVCA have taken lightly. We are a small charity who pay for all building works, consumables, cleaning and maintenance at the centre. We are looking into long term solutions, but feel immediate action is necessary to deter that small minority that ruin it for everyone else.

Local Elections 2026 - meet your candidates for Stroud Green Ward at our public hustings.

Sunday 19th April 2026, 5pm to 7pm
(Doors 4.45pm)

What is a Hustings and why should I attend?

A hustings is a public meeting that brings electoral candidates (or party representatives) and voters together in the run up to an election. It is your chance to ask questions and hear directly from the people who are running to represent you.
It’s a perfect opportunity to gather information that will enable you to make informed decisions when it is time to vote.

Are you a someone who has some time to spare, either every week or once a month, and wants to make a difference?
Would you like to earn tempo time credits to exchange for free cinema tickets or put towards days out, or even cheaper gym memberships?

Hornsey Vale Community Centre is in need of a few volunteers for our weekly Community Soup Café and monthly Lunch Club.

Our Community Soup Café, launched in October 2023, runs every Monday in term time.
We serve home-made soup using (mostly) surplus veggies supplied by our friends at The Felix Project, cooked by volunteers and served by our volunteers. It is casual, drop in and donation based, making it accessible for everyone.

The lunch club is a monthly, low cost, 2 course meal cooked by a professional chef.

The soup café and Lunch Club have become important events for many in our local community, offering wholesome meals, a warm space, and an opportunity to socialise.

Volunteer Roles for the Soup Café and Lunch Club:
* Welcoming our guests and taking donations.
* Serving the soup/food.
* Help to tidy up/wash up/pack away at the end.
* Befrienders - come along and chat to our guests, make them feel welcome and be good company.

If you want to find out more, please email [email protected] or reply to this post. Please share with anyone you think can help.
