Last week we were delighted to be joined by Dr Emma Clare from End of Life Doula UK, who gave us so much food for thought about the amazing work of end-of-life doulas.

In this short clip, Emma explains the importance of community care when someone is dying, and how a doula's work both differs from and complements the medical care they receive.

So looking forward to our next CPD session! 🕓 At 4pm on Wednesday 13th May, we'll be joined by the CEO of End of Life Doula UK, Emma Clare, for an introduction to the role of end of life doulas.

This talk will explore how doulas provide emotional, practical and spiritual support to people approaching the end of life and those important to them, as well as working in their communities to increase death literacy.

After Emma's talk, there will be a Q&A session where you can ask questions and engage in discussion.

According to the Environmentally Friendly Funeral Awareness Survey 2023 carried out by the Natural Burial Company, when asked:

"Have you, or do you intend to, plan your own funeral service?"

🔸️27% said "Yes I have, it will be green"
🔸️56% said "No I haven't, but it would be green"
🔸️2% said "Yes I have, it would be traditional"
🔸️0% said "No I haven't, but it would be traditional"
🔸️15% said "I will leave it up to my family"

🌿 That's a whopping 83% that either have planned or would like to have a green funeral.

The trend is clear... and it's here to stay. The funeral profession must rise to meet the needs of the eco-conscious generation!

Opened in 2006, Sun Rising Natural Burial Ground was once a field in hay and is now a wonderful mix of ecological habitats, with growing native woodland, wildflower meadows, grassland, hedgerows, a pond and wetland 🌿

Burials can be arranged either via a funeral director or using their own caring and supportive arrangement service, meaning funerals can be personal, gentle and family-oriented.

The Longhouse is a beautiful oak-framed building with views over open landscape, which is used both for funeral services and for refreshments afterwards. In warmer months, families may choose to have funerals or picnics in the open Roundhouse or one of the mown areas.

Those of all faiths and beliefs are welcome, and with no time limits, funerals feel supported and relaxed 💚

A recent report by PlanetMark and Full Circle Funerals found cremation to be the most environmentally harmful method of disposal, particularly natural gas cremation which releases an average of 126kg CO². The disposal of ashes was also found to have harmful effects on both land and water.

🌿 Natural burial, on the other hand, was found to release 0kg of CO² and have next to no harmful effects on air, land or water.

Of course there are many other considerations regarding the overall carbon footprint of funerals 👣 ...

But we see this as a no-brainer... natural burial is the clear way forward.

We will also consider the important question of how to improve public awareness of eco-friendly and personalised funerals.
